The float started sticking so the carb drips. Other than taking it off is there any way (besides tapping it) for a temporary fix? TIA

No. Take it off and fix it.

Does it have a drain plug in the bowl? If so try draining it to see if there is any sediment in the bowl. May be just a piece of trash not letting the needle seat. other than that, give it a good cleaning and install a kit. I found out a loong time ago that a good cleaning is just as important as the kit itself.

How do you know if the float is sticking??? If you have not opened up the carb all you know is that the float or needle is not doing it job of shutting off the gas flow and it could be as simple as some dirt/rust in the needle seat and if that is the case you can some times take the drain plug out, catch the gas to look at it and reuse it and some times that is enough to get things working again. Now if the float is in fact sticking the only fix is to open up the carb and find out what is going on.

In normal operation the needle valve may only open a few thousands to allow enough gas to enter the bowl and satisfy the engine's needs. This can allow contaminate to become trapped between the needle and seat resulting in leakage. To open the valve completely allowing the contaminate to flush through: 1) shut off the fuel at the tank, 2) allow the tractor to run until it stops from lack of fuel, 3) turn on the fuel. This opens the valve completely and turning on the fuel acts to flush any contaminate.

I always try this first since it requires no disassebly and many times cures the leakage. If the carb has a bowl drain - it is also good practice to drain the bowl to remove the contaminate from the system.

My 640 will have a spell of flooding and then go for a long time with out doing it.I think it is caused by very fine particles that get thru the screens.I have found many leaking floats plus plastic floats that have absorbed gas.The plastic floats have to be weighed with a scale to check them.Bent float arms will let the float rub on the bowl and leave a bright spot on the brass.I have tried the Grose inlet valves and find they leak and stick shut. The viton tip will stick shut.A bit of trash will make it leak by just like a steel needle.
