Mower Issues

Been looking for a sickle mower for quite some time, finally picked up a massy ferguson #5, problem is its a two point hitch setup, and my tractor is a three point hitch. How should i be modifying the mower to attach to the tractor?

What do you mean "two point hitch?"

Like, the IH Fast Hitch? or something else? If something else, please post a picture.

Massey didn't have a "two point hitch." All their implements are 3pt hitch unless someone modified them.

If someone welded on a pair of fast hitch points it should be a simple matter of cutting them off and replacing the 3pt pins. Odds are the welding isn't very good so you should be able to figure out where they're welded on.

looks like a ball of some type was supposed to attach on the side closest to the sickle bar, and the other side just bolted on.

Thomas you need to post us some pictures that are of the entire mower. I don't think what you have is a three point mower. I am not even sure it is a Massey Ferguson. If it is you maybe missing the hitch wish bone because right next to the ball you have picture is the break away slide. It would not be hooked up to anything in your picture.

So step back and take us some better pictures of the whole mower. Also have them framed correctly. It is hard to look at a 45 degree angle.

Heres some hopefully better pics, dont have access to anything other than my cell phone camera. there is a Massey ferguson logo painted over on the back of the mower, and the pitman arm is not attached yet.

Thomas: I have never seen a mower like that one. It is not made to be a lift type mower. It is a trailing type mower. It is made to be used with a tractor that does not have a three point system on it. It would just bolt to a flat hitch like The IH M or H would have. It might be off of an Massey Harris but all of the Massey-Ferguson tractors had a three point hitch on them. That was Ferguson's claim to fame was the invention of the three point hitch.

As I was writing you that I had not seen one like yours before. I thought of a book I have of old Massey Harris advertising. It has an add for your mower in it. It is a Massey-Harris Number 5 mower. Not a Massey-Ferguson mower.

I had my son take a picture of the ad. I will try to get it to post.

It may be worth more as a display antique than as a worker, LOL. If you are determined I would set it beside a small 3 point tool then just envision how to make the hitch part of the other tool fit on the front of your mower. Then make a materials list, (probably mostly angle stock) then start cutting and welding. If you want the bar to raise you will need linkage to do that automatically, but that would be very complicated. To figure it out you would probably have to look at one that is mounted on the tractor in order to copy it.

Get a $30 3pt drawbar and weld/bolt stuff to it to make it a semi-mount mower like it was originally.

Thanks All, I already built a 3pt drawbar sorta thing to move the post pounder, I"ll build another to make the mower work like it was designed.

Thomas, I think all you would need is a ball on the right side for the pivot to hook on. Then two ears sticking up for a through pin for the turn buckle to hook into. The turn buckle adjusts the amount of lead the sickle bar has. You usually want the outside end to lead just a little bit. Maybe 3-4 inchs more than the heel. The lift arm could have a hydraulic cylinder made to work it.

here is a link to a EBAY seller that has a Massey-Harris number 5 parts manual. for sale. You would have $21 with freight in it.

Here is a Massey-Harris mower that has a hitch on the front. You can see it and get an idea of what you need to make.
