24T re-timing and maintanence tip

Just tried my 24T in the field. Worked great for 1 and a half bales. The feeder auger quit turning. Long story short, the rear gear case that turns the shaft 90 degrees to run the knotter and feeder auger lost a cotter pin. On the shaft that enters the gear box there is a cotter pin that keeps the shaft from moving backwards. This wore through and allowed the shaft to move towards the rear of the baler allowing the drive gear to come off of its key. Now I need to re-time the baler. So if you haven't already checked that little cotter pin, DO SO!!!!!

Any tips on how to re-time it? The manual is somewhat understandable, just looking for some experienced insider tips.

Thanks.

With hay cleaned out of baler, trip tying mechanism by turning measure wheel, turn flywheel(CCW facing it) until PH face is in the center of the first feeder fork slot, measure from the tip of feeder fork to the measurement in operators manual(it's been to long to remember correct inches on a 14T) but it should be 10-13 inches, continue turning flywheel until needle tips are just even with the top of the lower bale case channels(part that curves up at each bottom slot in BC,plungerhead tips should be even with needle tips IE should be 1-1/2- 2 inches between PH face & needle tips with needle tips flush with channel uprights. I probably left out something as it's been over 35 yrs since I timed a 14T or 214. Later model JD sq balers are easier to time for me.

I am getting a clearance of 3 inches with the tip of the triangles flush with the needle. I will adjust to the distance range from the PH to the needle. Sound right?

The needles do not need to clear the bottom of the bale case channels until the points on PH are at or behind the needles.

CAUTION: be sure the plunger head stop is loose and functional. Also be sure the frt chain is snug.

Whatever directions you're following make sure you're turning the flywheel in the right direction. Took me a while to figure out what I was doing wrong.
