My wife had to work last night, and asked me to meet her at the local VFW for dinner. I drove my pickup, since it it hadn't been on the road for a while. ('89 Chevy Xcab, longbox 4X4).
The whole 6 miles into town, the transmission didn't upshift right. The 1-2 upshift wouldn't occur until about 30 mph, and the 2-3 at about 45. I don't think it ever did shift into OD. I tried upshifting it with the shifter, but no-go.
All through dinner I'm thinking all I need is for the transmission to go out on the pickup. Then, when I went to go home, the thing drove and shifted perfectly normal.
What the heck? Could a valve have stuck in the valve body? Something in the governor stuck? Granted, the pickup is not a daily driver, and it's not unusual for it to sit for a couple of weeks or more.
I'll drive it a bit more over the weekend. There's a large community college 5 1/2 miles from me that has a heckuvan automotive department, and I've had transmissions rebuilt there in the past, so I think I'll talk to them on Monday. The instructors have no profit motive, and you can usually get straighter answers from them than at a repair shop.
They'll take in work from the public, dependent on where they are in the insruction process, and if it's something that fits into their needs. The work is done by students, but they're supervised and graded by the instructors, so you probably get better work done than at some repair shops. And you may have to wait a month or two to get something in, but there's no labor charge, just parts, shop supplies, and a small percentage for overhead.
If any of ya'll have any ideas as to what happened, I'm all ears.
