Hydraulic Pump Question (need help)

I just put a Gear Hydraulic Pump on the front of our garden tractor, after building mounts and finally getting the pump mounted and plumed i found out that the pump is turning the wrong way. Can i just switch the "in" and the "out" and run the pump "backwards" ? Will this damage the pump or does it matter?
I would rather not rebuild all of the mounts because i barely got the pump in there as it is.
Any impute would be great
Thanks

Ran into the same problem 2 years ago. Bought an after-market power steering kit for an Oliver 550. The kit did not come with a pump. Went to a combine junk yard and got a pump off of a John Deere combine, made a mount for the engine but when I started the tractor the pump was pumping backwards. Switched the lines and it has worked flawlessly for two years. I was careful to keep the lines the way they were plumbed on the combine originally, but on the combine the pump faced the engine instead of being mounted on the side of it. This was a Vickers pump by the way.

Some pumps have pressure scavenging set to the intake side, so seal leakage and lube bypass oil ends up on the intake side' If operated in reverse, the seals may leak to the outside. Jim

I got this pump at a auction, so i don't know much about it?. It is stamped E.T.N #25000
How do you tell if it is a bi-rotational? when i turn the pump backwards (by hand) it pumps fluid?
Thanks for everyone's help

look very carefully at the center section of the pump.there could be an arrow cast into this section,if there is,take the pump apart and turn the center section around to point the arrow at the direction you are turning it.

Some pumps are Bi-Directional, most are not.
Your pump "Looks" aluminum, possabily a "Cessna"
or a "Webster Electric", check to see if there
are numbers and letters stamped into the mounting
flange

Generally.... NO. Some pumps are reversible in that you can partially disassemble them and put them back together in a different configueration to reverse their direction... but those are odd. An off the shelf C/S, Permco, Danfoss type pump is uni-directional.

Coyote,

If that pump is like most, it doesn't have bearings that can stand the side thrust from the belt drive. I would expect it to wear out in a short time unless it has ball or needle bearings.
