Firestone Tires

Have a one year old set of 13.6-38 Firestone Field and Road 4 plys on a G john Deere. The tires are cracking! Cracks on the sidewalls, and cracks between the lugs. I cant believe it, i just cant. What would cause this? I have the proper pressure, and it never sits outside.

About a week ago, I priced a set of rear tires. This was from an independent dealer that has about 8-10 different brands in the warehouse. Now maybe this guy has an ax to grind, but he told me over the phone that the new Firestones are nothing more than an inner tube with bars. He also said before this job, he had worked for Firestone for 15 years. Like I said, maybe he's just a disgruntled ex-employee.

I bought a couple about that size for my 4010 JD and they cracked in the first month, but they had been in a storage 18 wheeler trailer several years and they were only $200 each (10 years ago). I didn't bother to mention it.

I bought a new tractor in '07 and the front tires were cracked while sitting on the lot. I got them replaced without a problem and upon doing a google satellite of the site where the tractors are in final assembly, tires were piled up outside in the sun. Answered that.

Do a little research and see if there is a manufacture date code on the tires. If they check out very old, then I would be after the guy that sold them to me. Tom

My newest Firestones were purchased in 1998 and no cracks so far but they seem to wear a little faster.

That is exactly why for the past 30 years I would not buy a Firestone tractor tire. 6 months old and they would do nothing plus they did not have the pulling power of the 45 lug tires and were equal to one size smaller tire. I once told the guys at the Firestone tire proving ground there tires were junk. The old style with the cross connected bars from 1946 with 1/2" tread would out pull a new set of the field and road tires. And that 10 x 38 was same size as the 12.6 and not the 11.4 that should be the same size.

They just don't make them like they used to. I have a pair of U. S. Royal 11.2 X 28 on my 9N Ford that the PO put on in '66. Not a weather crack on them! I'm guessing them have spent well over 5 of those years standing ontside. I marvel about this everytime I walk past them.

How old are the tires? What I can tell you is that the Field & Road were discontinued probably 2-3 years ago and replaced by the SAT... so you mabey got some tires that were sitting around a while.... Age/dry rot are the usual causes of that type of thing.

Im not sure on the age of the tire. They came from a dealer who usually moves tires like this pretty fast, so i wouldnt think they sat too long at his place. All i know is tires now days are junk. Period. The best ones i have seen so far are the. . wait for it. ..china tires. Alliance brand. Cheaper than a 4 ply firestone, yet they are an 8 ply! Friend put a set on his tractor 4 years ago and they are holding up great. Also Carlisle seems good too. But listen to this. . .I am a tech at a JD dealership and new tractos with one season on them, roughly 320-400 hrs and the tires are so shot already from stubble that guys are asking for new tires left and right. I dont blame them one bit, this is ridiculous!
