OT almost scammed

We had 25 people for lunch on the patio today. I live in Omaha, 1/2 block from a busy intersection-California and Saddle Creek. A clean dressed, well groomed 30 something male came up to my fence and asked for money from some of the others. They refused, so he asked to talk to the homeowner-ME! Sad story, he needed fuel, forgot his wallet at his office, could I give him $5, and within 45 minutes he would bring me $15! I told him I had a 5 gallon can of fuel in my garage, and if he brought the car here, I would put it in for him! (I know, worth more than he asked for, but calling his bluff!) Suddenly he was concerned that the gas was old, would it damage his brand new VW? I told him sorry, can't help you then, and walked away! That seems to me to be more work than working!

We had a family down here working each town. Out of gas but some how the car started right up. When the cops told them to move on.

There is a red van working the Ky. In. area. Tire blowout broke need gas wife crying kids hot etc. got me for my last $25 a friend for $50. We looked for them but they had moved on.

After spring break they'll hit you up for a gallon or whatever you're willing to let'em have. They hang around places like the Sam's club gas pumps, it don't take long for them to get a tank full of free gas.

That seems to be the new trend. Asking for gas money.

Wife and I went to Wally World yesterday afternoon, came out and some guy asked for a couple bucks for gas. I politely said I only had credit cards. Wife got a little huffy with me on the way to the car about it. said I whould have helped the poor guy out. I told her okay just set here in car and watch him. 30 mins later and seeing other folks falling for it, the guy walks down the parking lot across the street and straight into the liquor store.

I hate people who scam like that because then when
someone is in a legitimate bind nobody will help. I pulled
into a gas station at 1:00 pm one night 45 miles from home.
I had been working late and was almost out of gas. I was at
the pump reached for my wallet and "oh crap"! I talked the
clerk into loaning me $10. I'm sure he thought he'd just lost
$10. The next day I dropped of an envolope for him at the
station with his money plus an extra $20 for saving my butt.

Another Scam is for somebody to dress three or four kids a raggady clothes and stop an a church
and ask for "HELP". (Kids are hungry) It worked in our area for awhile, until several church secretary's were comparing notes an a meeting,
and realized that they'd hit up lots of church's
the same day, and recieved cash from special funds.

I know what your taking about , traveling across country & you pull in a rest area car with hood up & they say that their broke down & need to get home , emergency in the family.
Could you help them , you would like to help but people are making it tough on the really needy ones.
