JD2555 Stuck in Field

This tractor is going to be the end of my sanity!

Almost done planting with it but still have food plots to do - I'm running with a leaking forward clutch cylinder...but almost done - today the PTO lever would not disengage the PTO - have not had any problems or even a hint of problems (w the PTO) and didn't hit anything while cutting this morning but the lever feels loosy forward and backward...like its not doing anything... I turned the tractor off so I could remove the PTO shaft and move the equipement out of the field and...(you probably already guessed) the tractor will not restart - doesn't matter which position the lever is in (course I know it won't start engaged) but I figured it was a lever position switch...

Anyone know how to bypass this so I can restart the tractor, load it up, and get it to JD??

Its not cranking or anything - I'm guessing there is something similar to the neutral safety switch...I found the switch righ near the base of the lever for the PTO and tried to short the contacts but no dice...(it was just a guess).

Its a JD2555, collar shift trans, no cab, w reverser and no hi/low...

This is how to make it crank. CHECK AND MAKE SURE THAT IT IS IN PARK!!!!!! DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK because if it is gear then it is going to run over you!!!!!

On the top of the starter the starter solenoid has the large terminal with the battery cable hooked to it. Take a screw driver ( one that you really don't care about) and jump between the battery terminal and the little terminal that has a small wire on it. If the starter is not bad it will crank as long as you keep it jumped across.

You should be able to start it this way. The tractor has a PTO safety switch and a neutral one as well. I wonder if the PTO linkage is unhooked internally. There is a small roll pin in the cross shaft. If that would have failed it would make the lever not work. If it is still shifted engaged then the safety switch would not let it crank.

To get the shifter cover off of the 55 series is a little harder because of the bent gear shifters. If you are going to hire it repaired then I would just jump start it and let someone that is familiar with it do the work. If you want to try it your self post back and we can try to help.

excellent - thank you! I'm familiar with the roller pin - I broke that 6 years ago, jd split it and replaced the pin...I have no idea why...but it feels like it felt then...sheared!

But...the forward clutch cylinder is nearly wiped out so its gotta be split anyway...

I think there isn't a pto safety switch switch on a 2555.

UPDATE: You were correct and I was incorrect.

Yea - but I know it will not start with the PTO lever engaged (forward)...That I am certain of...When I sheared the pin 6 years ago - it would flop back and forth and I remember if it was forward - no start - but backward it would start...

I killed the engine as I could see the PTO wasn't coming out and I was done my work and wanted to get back to the house - the lever felt like it did 6years ago - but I was sure I could restart once it was levered back...but it must be something else other than and easy to see external switch or contact switch on the lever.

And I can't find anything for the 2555 either showing a pto safety...but very little fits this tractor - I think JD has at least 3 variations of this thing...

I've got to get the forward clutch fixed...so it has to be split anyhow...annoyingly, when I drove by it yesterday evening to go fishing - I could see one of the rear tires was dead flat...thats just the kinda year I've been having...so today, I'll air it up, jump it, then get it home so the tire can get fixed - then it goes to my JD guy...

TXJim the 55 series utility tractors where the first to have a PTO start switch. All the earlier Mannheim tractors did not have one.

We had a customer get killed when he was working on a manure spreader and his son started the tractor with the PTO engaged. The beater decapitated him. It was a real mess. I got to go with the truck driver to pickup the tractor and manure spreader. The family wanted them both gone and sold. We did it for them.

They sued JD and got a big settlement. My territory manager told us that this settlement made JD install safety start PTO switches on the utility tractors. I don't know this for sure but that is what he told us at the time. He was involved in the reporting. As a JD dealer you are required to make a report to JD as soon as you hear of anyone being seriously hurt or killed on a piece of JD equipment you have sold. In all of the years I was at JD dealers we had three fatalities to report.

TXjim: Don't sweat it. I have been out of the dealers since 2005. So the new stuff I can't even get the models numbers straight. Time is flying by and I don't adjust to change very well. Have a good holiday.

It aggravates me when I make an incorrect statement. I've stated on this site that I think info given out on equipment should be accurate. I've also learned a lot about JD equipment from this site since I've been on it.
