Mail delivery brought the sweet potato"s (11) and they were planted by my son this evening. Our first time planting these spuds. Wife loves em and so does our puppy who loves em raw . The brand name is Georgia Jet.Wondering if you guys grow em and these are supposed to be in the weight of 2 lb spuds. Trying something new for the garden to make up.Our regular Burbank russets are reallyyyyy up and growing at such a rate, might be getting a few early. If the sweet potato are 2 lb size, who can eat one with a meal????More then I could swallow. lol.Ever hear of em and how do they keep over the winter? information from those who grow em would be appreciated LOU. P.S. 2nd pix is our regular spuds, 3rd is our radishes. Well it"s supper time and time for GUN SMOKE.

if handled properly, sweet potatoes will keep well in excess of 12 months. don't let them get chilling injury. immediately after harvest, they need to be "cured" at around 85 degrees F for a week or two. otherwise they're not sweet. after that, keep between 55 and 65. don't let them get below 50-55. be gentle during harvest- the skin is very thin. we dig them, put them in cardboard boxes dirty, and straight to the hot room. wash them as we use them.
here, (NY) not too much bothers them in terms of insects and diseases, but deer LOVE them, so if that is an issue look out. if you keep them completely weed free for the first month, they will "run" and form a dense canopy and be set for the rest of the season.

yum yum.

mazemeister,
Thanks for the helpful tips, I'll print out your answer, and keep it close. Hopefully we will get some good sweet potato's from the plants. As we said, this is our first attempt at this type of plant. Thanks again,
LOU

TomA,
We kinda grew a little bit more this year than last, but it will be used or given to needy folks, that can't grow their own,but they still love their fresh vegies.
We record the gunsmokes also on Direct,so we can watch them at our leisure, it sure beats the junk they put on TV and call it great programs of today.Wife and son watch it with me also, shame James arness got old and passed away, that type of show and actor made it worthwhile to watch.Someone will probably try a remake with Doogie Howser playing Dillion,or worse, it's not the same.It will never be duplicated.
Regards, LOU

Sweet potatoes like heat, we put black plastic on the ridge. One of the best ways to fiw them is to butter the outside, wrap in tin foil and bake in the oven.My wife also makes a pudding with marshmellows on top.The longer you keep them the better the flavor. It is amazing how much more flavor in Jan than when first dug.

Sweet Potatoes in Wisconsin. I wish you luck because unlike regular potatoes they love the heat. They are a sub tropical plant.

You can harvest the potatoes at any time so pick them when they reach table size.
If the plant gets hit by a frost cut the top off right away because the potato will start to rot as soon as the plant dies.
When you dig the potatoes they are not ready to eat. You need to store them for a while so they will turn sweet.
