OT - garage paint

Husband wants me to ask you folks for recommendations for good exterior paint... if there is such a thing these days. Is there a brand that will actually hold up for several years? We are figuring on oil-based - need available in the US. We want to paint our old, little one-car garage (in which he retored his old JD B) and some pillars on our house. We just want a paint brand/type that will last.

Have heard some reference in the past to marine paint - not sure how well it works or what the cost would be, nor about availability of the stuff.

All our other out buildings are steel sided.

My experience with latex paint is that it"s not as durable as oil based for exterior use. We"ve sided up everything around here with vinyl, and aluminum trim. Hopefully, painting is a thing of the past.

Here in New England oil based paints are all but
outlawed due to air regulations. I needed a good
finish on some garage doors so I went with a
Sherwin-Williams paint Duration. It's latex and
warranted not to peel and to last 40 years. I've
had it on the doors for 4 years and so far it is
OK. I also used it on my home on a reshingled
side and it still looks perfect 3 years later. In
both cases the areas to be painted were either
new wood or washed with TSP before use. This is
from a guy that would never use anything but oil
based paint. Good luck with your project.

The preparation for painting and having other things in order (roof, gutters and flashing) will have more to do with the longevity of your paint job. Dad and I did the back of grocery store for a friend of the family. This was the third paint job in three years. We came in from Michigan to do this job in Illinois. We cleaned the gutters and fixed some flashing so the water wasn't running down the wall and getting behind the paint. We spent more time scraping than the previous "painter" did on the whole job and then we rolled it mostly because we didn't have an airless available. That was the last time the store was painted as Tom closed it 10 years later and the new owners knocked it down to build a strip mall. We picked up the furnace and some other equipment before it was demolished and the back still looked good.

I painted my garage about 12 years ago with some latex from a local hardware chain (McLendon's). It was pre-mixed barn red paint labeled as "barn and fence" paint. Has held up well in our western Washington climate. Only thing I've had to do is scrub it to get rid of the algae after a few years.

Will keep the scraping prep in mind. I'm sure it will take a lot, it is really old wood. Roof is good, just replaced last year... no gutters or downspounts - old garage has a pretty good overhang. Thanks!

Thanks - will keep barn/fence in mind. Never heard of McLendon's, so we must not have them in our area. We seem to have Ace or Hank's around here.

Will definitely check out Shermin Williams if it is supposed to last that long. Even if it cost significantly more, it would be worth it if it will actually last a lot of years. Thanks.

I would kind of like to side it - but guess we will paint it and see how it holds up. We will use oil based if it is still available (have not purchased exterior paint for several years). Thanks.

I agree. Prep well. Prime with a good primer, and let it cure fully. I once top coated a latex primer in 2 hours, its peeling. The side I did the week before cured several days, no peeling. Apparently, make a difference.

Thank you, Gitrib. I looked up the info on your web link and will pass it along to my husband.

Use oil based because it will put some oil back in the old wood you mention. I have found latex just puts a film over and is prone to cracking.
A good paint job is in the preparation.

Thanks, bendee. I agree we will need to do a good prep, lots of scraping and sanding. Maybe even a coat of primer or linseed oil before painting. It is an old, dry wood building.
