Just Wondering If You Use A Finish Mower For A

Brush Hog?

Finished mowing the "good part" and went to the trails into the woods and towards the pond.

Found the wife"s Fiskar trimmer"s and a bunch of twine!

Wonder if she will help me pull and sharpen blades?

My brother in law did.

Sure didn't lok like a good idea.

I kept suggesting a brush hog mower would work a lot better for him.

He said no, no. And kept replacing the 2 vee belts he'd burn up every other mowing; and the 2 spindles a year he'd burn up.

His deal, so whatever he wants to do, tho is was troubling to me. :)

One time I finally got the conversation far enough along, that he prefered the finishing mower because the vee belt would burn - he didn't want to wreck his tractor pto with a belt-less brush hog whwn he hit something......

So I pointed out the swinging blades on a brush hog, so it wouldn't wreck he tractor?

Oh, oh, he never knew the blades were free swinging.....

Oy.

Anyhow, the results are not pretty, it beats the living daylights out of a finish mower, not a good thing for long term.

Not advisable, they are a little "light" for bush hogging. But then if you had been using a real bush hog, there wouldn't be much left of the Fiskars.

No, but I use my 10ft JD HX10 brush hog for a finish mower for most of my 7 acre yard. Actually does a pretty nice job, but the 4320 I use for pulling it is a bit overkill.

I normally use the bushhog on our lawn, its only 1/4 acre or less. If the discbine is hooked up I use that instead, cuts cleaner! I keep pushing the field closer to the house, when my wife mows she takes a few extra passes at the field to expand the lawn.

never, using a finish mower in the rough stuff will destroy it, its just not made for that, kind of like using your cadillac for a hay truck lol i do use a brush hog with its blades sharpend up real good for a finish mower though it does real good, as long as i dont let it drag the ground when turning

Clear the trails into the woods with a rotary cutter, loppers, and chain saw.

Spray the briars and weeds to kill them back.

Once the grass starts growing, then use the finishing mower.

Lots of work, but sure makes a nice looking tractor trail.

I use a 6' Bush Hog finish mower behind my A. Everything's been cleared off with a brush hog first but it works pretty well and makes a nice yardlike trail. Now my commercial walk behind mower probably gets used for a brush hog more than anything else!

What year is that Worthington? Looks like it has "J" on the front. My dad would have known but I'm guessing late 50's/early sixties? Jacobsen bought Worthington because they had the best reel design. That must be the forerunner to the F10, F20 and HF15 mowers. My dad sold a ton of them and actually holds the world sales record for the 9 gang F20's. He said a lot of sod farms started up in the 70's. The Canadian gov't. in their infinite wisdom/stupidity forced Jake to take the box off the back of later year machines because it classified them as pick up truck with higher import taxes. One of the most ridiculous rules ever! They are a pretty specialized piece of equipment to be considered a truck.
