Tractor Surging

I have an IH 184 Lo-Boy. Recently rebuilt carb (needle, seat, float pin, gasket) due to gas leaking out of carb. Runs great now but after 1/2 hour it starts to run rough and surge. I have to adjust the main jet adjustment needle out to let in more fuel to get it to run better. It will run good for a short time and then surge. I can continue to adjust the main jet adjustment needle out to get it to run smooth again but even with the adjustment needle wide open it surges. I checked to make sure there was fuel in the sediment bowl (and there was). The tractor doesn't have a thermostat to go bad and it had plenty of coolant. I'm beginning to think I just need to replace the carb???

Does choking it hurt or help?? If it helps there is a good chance you missed something in the carb or another thing since you say after warm you may have a leak as in vacuum leak at a gasket and a way to check that is use an unlit propane torch and wave it around the manifold. if it stops surging then you found the leak area

Thanks for the quick reply. The choke helps the surging. I've had that carb apart 5 times cleaning and replacing parts. When you say a vacuum leak do you mean in the carb or engine?

Vacuum leak can be the carb the manifold as in where the carb bolts to the manifold or where it bolts to the engine. Also to clean a carb as well as it needs to be cleaned you need to sock it 24 hours in a good carb cleaner then spray it out with a carb spray and also use a small wire to make 100% sure the passage ways are clean. and also use compressed air to blow them out. I use a torch tip cleaner tool for making sure the passage ways are open

Sounds like you have a restricted fuel supply to the carb. Being it takes that long to act up, first thing to check is the tank vent in the filler cap. When the surging starts, try removing the tank filler cap and see if you get a whoosh of air entering the tank, see if this also relieves the surging.
If no plugged vent, you may have something floating in the tank, plugging the line to the carb.
May need to remove the tank for a good cleaning.

Surging is generally caused by a lean mixture problem and that"s cause by air bypassing the carb metering system.. Check the throttle shaft for looseness and leakage the attach flange for a leaky gasket, cracked or rusted intake manifold or leaking cylinder head to maniold gasket.

I can't speak for your tractor but both myself and my neighbor had surging problems on our lawnmowers when using gasoline/ethanol blend.
100% gas oline is can be a little difficult to find in corn states such as Iowa but a carb. rebuild and 100% gasoline correctected the problem. My Sthil dealer explained it to me but in summary ethanol and aluminum are not friendly.

Sounds like you have something in your tank and after running it gets sucked over the outlet stopping the flow to the carb. I had this on an old farmall F14. disconnect you line at the carb and let it run for a while and see if it slows down any. if so it's something in the tank or your sediment bowl.

There is a fine mesh filtering screen in the top of that sediment bowl. If that screen is plugged, or partially plugged, the symptoms will be exactly as you describe, and yes, the sediment bowl WILL be full of gasoline.
