Boy do I have a problem with those little black ants this year. I stop them one place they fine another. I"m declaring war! I had to throw out a whole box of Cheerios the other morning when I poured a bowl and it was crawling with ants. I put an end to that but then they invaded the counter tops through a wall outlet. I stopped that and then it was another one. Stopped that and then it was where the drain pipe from the sink comes in and they found my trash can and were having a field day! Sometimes I can get them to eat liquid ant bait but sometimes they aren"t interested.

Do any of you know how those Hydramethylnon granules work? Is it poison the ants have to eat or is it something the ants touch to kill them? The brand name I have is MaxForce.

I have been fighting them too. I put out Terro liquid baits in the kitchen and bath and Terro outdoor bait outside my house. It stopped them inside the house and they are still taking bait from the outside ones. It took about 2 days to get them out of the house. I bought the Terro at TSC.

I found dead ants in my salt shaker tonight!!!!
Had to remove the pepper shaker top and inspect it well just in case.

Not sure if this works for what my mom referred to as "sugar ants", but it does work for black carpenter ants... BORAX POWDER (found in your local laundry supply isle of the grocery store). Don't know how/why it works, but it does on the carpenter ones for sure - nor have I seen any little brown/reddish sugar ants since then either.

Our house was built about 100 years ago (in all seriousness). Anyway about 10 years ago, had some black carpenter ants take up residence. Hired a bug guy who drilled little holes in all the walls... then used some type of air bulb to blow white powder into each cavity in the wall and all around the sill of the house inside and out and across the path of all entry doors. ANTS ALL DISAPPEARED! The bug guy had said if they ever appear call him again... OR JUST SPRINKLE BORAX POWDER ALL AROUND - so I did that numerous times just for good measure. No ants ever came back.

Hummmm sprayed some white power in the walls and nothing is getting in any more. You sure the exterminator didn't use anthrax. ;)

Borax powder, or get Cyfluthrin insecticide.
Cyfluthrin is the main ingredent. Super potent, kills all ants. (no exceptions)
Raid spray will work too, smells bad though.

was having those same tiny black ants coming out of counter outlets and when termite inspector was here, he said I had termite entry around the pipes coming through the slab up to kitchen sink. He drilled hole in slab under sink & pumped in Termidor SC mixed in 4 gallons of water. Hope it got the termites, but for sure, it stopped all ants!

We did have trouble with sugar ants. About four years ago we started useing a product called Home Defence. I spray it around the outside of house around the baseboards ( twice a season). It can be used on counter tops and is safe around kids and pets.

Borax mixed with some sugar to entice them. The element boron that is part of the borax molecule is a insect aside. If I recall correctly borax occurs naturaly in mineral deposits and is mined.

I use boric acid mixed with sugar free maple syrup. Regular maple syrup dries out too fast. About a week and no more ants.

Local co-op has stuff called Talstar. A quart last forever. Mix an ounce or two in a gallon of water in a hand sprayer. Spray all around the foundation once a month with a real fine mist. Don't know if it kills'm or if they just will not cross it but it's like have'n a moat around your house as far as bugs go.

Good luck.

(quoted from post at 20:54:38 05/17/12) I've always had good luck with any spray with Permethrin in it.
hat one works very well, & as a + it is about as safe as you can get.

Foaming glass cleaner from an aerosol can kills them on contact. Not the best thing but Id rather that than poison on my counters.

Yes and if you do your house in it when you build it...put it down then the flooring surface material, you'll never have a roach. Been in my house 33 years and have seen 1 or 2 and they probably came in with groceries from the store.

Don't know your age, but back in the days of BW TV, there was a show we watched named "20 Mule Team Borax". They mined it in Death Valley, CA. and hauled it out in wagons pulled by 20 mules. Had quite a long running TV series. You'd think that would pretty mundane viewing, but we enjoyed it and they always had something going on.

It works good as a laundry sweetener, like for those of you who may be old fashioned and wrap your baby's bottom in cloth diapers.

If you look at the front of the box right in the middle is the team and the wagon.

I have good luck with Terro to attract them. THen suck them up with the vacuum cleaner. Keep sucking them up frequently. They will be gone within 3 days..

I'm still a young pup at a little shy of 30 years old. Death valley rings a bell. They also use borax as a flux in metallurgy.

Yesssss. Next time you are in a full service grocery store, as the smaller stores may not stock it, go to the washing power section and look around. As I recall the stuff is in a white box with red and black writing on it and across the top it says "20 Mule Team Borax". Try it, you'll like it for roaches, and diapers!!!!!!!
