OT Troy Bilt tiller gear lube

I've got a 20+ year old 8HP Horse tiller that leaks from a score on the tine shaft. I add gear oil everytime I use it but I've been thinking about filling the gear box to the proper level with some JD Corn Head Grease. What do you think?

Let us know how it works. Mine leaks like a sieve. Been thinking I should fix it for the last several winters. That bronze gear in there is expensive. Already been that route once.

You could put new seals on the tine shaft and try to get them in a different spot so they will last a while. Might help some. Corn head grease could be a possibility, if it runs through the shaft from the transmission.

It's not hard to replace those seals under those tine holders. Remove that long 1/2-inch cap screw and use a brass drift and big hammer and smack that tine holder a few times it should pop off. I use a sliding bar to pull the one seal.
Fill it with 80-140 wt gear lube. If your tiller
has the pto where you can engage or disengage the tines you also need to check the gear oil in there. The plug has a dip stick and doesn't hold very much oil. Don't overfill it. Hal

Whatever you use, make sure it is not 'EP' type lube, like most 85-90 hypoid type. EP lube is death to bronze worm gears.

I agree with the others. Its a easy fix and not hard to replace that seal. I did it once back when and have not had a problem since.

The seals looked fine when I took it apart a couple of years ago, it was a score on the shaft where a piece of something got wrapped on the shaft tight up to the seal.

I was trying to avoid taking it apart again becaues of this darn psoriatic arthritis! Can"t get it under control! Hurts like heck.
