Fuel Smell from exhaust.

If I take my hand and put it over the vertical exhaust on my Gas MF 135 it smells like fuel afterwards. Is this normal? What would cause this?

I have Autolite 386s installed on my tractor. I've seen listings for hot or cold plugs. Would putting in a hotter plug help? What would work for my tractor if so?

Christos........have you tried the same trick with yer BelchFire-V8??? It is semi-normal to smell fuel on yer hand. That is why they have exhaust pipes to gittem outta yer face.......sheesh ......the amazed Dell

Fuel burning efficiency wasn't a perfect science when your tractor was built.

Don't ask me for the math - but if you're burning X amount of gas to produce Y power - then if it's not 100% efficient (and it isn't), there's Z left over coming out the exhaust.

Smell is a very hard way to quantify how much gas isn't burning properly. You certainly wouldn't want to adjust your carb by it.

A better method is to first watch for black smoke. That's a sure indicator that you're running rich. (backfiring is a hint too).

Then also keep a close eye on your plugs - look for carbon buildup over time.

I'm also assuming the engine is running fine and you're not skipping on any cylinders.

Dell,

I asked because the thing makes a popping sound every so often and black smoke puffs out.

I didn't know if it was sparkies or anything else. I've gotten my car to last hitting 370k but tractors, especially mine, have a life of their own. ;)

Changing spark plugs won't help.

Either the carburetor is slightly too rich, or you've got a minor ignition problem.

What do the spark plugs look like after you've run the tractor for a while? Describe the color and condition.

When was the last time the tractor had an ignition tuneup? New points, condenser, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor.

Rich is better than lean, so don't go messing with the carburetor just yet. Lean melts pistons. You can blow a lot of excess fuel out the exhaust for the cost of an engine overhaul.

New plugs, rotor button, points/
condenser two hours ago (March).

New wires last June.

When I gave it her tune up this year, I
pulled them out a week later two were
wet and two had soot. Checked the gap,
cleaned them.

Points were reset at .022”.

If you search w109caf on Youtube, I have
videos of what it is doing. I'm on my
phone and can't get the link.

Install 3116 autolites and a Pertonics points replacement. Check with a timing light that the advance is working. Get the coolant temp up to 195F yes really 195F . It will burn cleaner. Lean out the idle and main metering.

Checked compression and valve clearance? Would low compression on one of the cyl. cause incomplete combustion?I believe it does on the old worn 350 chev I have in a C-30. One cylinder has 40 psi compression, it fires but I do not think it burns the whole charge. It has a rich fuel smell out the exhaust but not enough for black smoke. Just a thought.

I had it rebuilt a number of years ago
and it hadn't been worked much...it only
has 23 hours on it. When it runs, it runs
well.

The plugs were wet and sooted and you wonder if it's running rich.
The answer is YES.
