Cranking Direction

Jim........which end of the engine you lookin' at???

Engines turn clock-wize when looking at the fan end. And surprizingly enuff, it don't matter whether yer positive (+) ground or negative (-) ground, yer starter motor ALWAYS turns the correct direction. .........Dell

First I agree with Dell. Second dirt track motors and some inboard boat motors some do run backwards.

(quoted from post at 11:23:18 05/12/12) What would cause a fresh rebuilt engine to crank counter clock wise? And then what is the fix ?? thanks Jim

If it's cranking backwards, it's got the wrong starter in it.
That's the only thing that would do that.

Some import cars turn the opposite direction. As also stated, marine and racing engines can turn one way or the other (not both, though).

I think there is a way to make your starter turn opposite, but it has something to do with the field coils and brushes.

Thankyou Gentlemen for your replies. My son is working on this tractor and seems to think that if you switch the battery cables back and forth that the battery will then blow-up, and or turn the crank one way or the other. I appreciate your replies. Jim

What engine are you working on? A lawn mower starter has permanent magnet fields. Re versing the cables will make it turn backwards but the bendix won't catch.

I thought some of the new starters used permanent magnets. Wouldn't those run backwards if the polarity was reversed? That still wouldn't let it crank backwards because of the overrunning clutch in the starter drive.

Most small engines (IE :lawn tractor) Have perment magnet starters that will rotate in reverse if the battery polarity is reversed.
You are correct that the starter drive will not allow a reverse rotating PM starter to turn the engine in reverse.

when your talking left or right or direction it is from standing behind the engine. thats common procedure and the way it is.

That is true when you are talking about parts on the engine. Unfortunately engine rotation is commonly cited as if you were to crank it with a hand crank, looking at it from the front. That means you have an engine that rotates clockwise and a PTO that also rotates clockwise but they are turning inopposite directions.

Just to add to the confusion starter rotation is referred to when you are looking at the drive gear end. That means a starter that is installed along side the engine with the drive gear to the rear will need to turn clockwise to rotate the engine clockwise even though they are turning in opposite direction where the gears mesh.
