OT: Lawn mower shopping (opinions needed)

My old cub cadet laid down last week. Its got an issue with the hydro transmission. I am gonna break down and buy a new mower. I have a cub dealer near by and he always gives good service. They sell Cub and Exmark. I am looking at something that is zero turn, 25-27hp. He was really pushing a cub called The Tank ($7900). He didn't really push any of the Exmarks. I am gonna go look at Scag mowers tomorrow. I am planning on picking up a few yards to custom mow when I retire so I need something durable. Do any of you guys have one of these "Tanks"or know anything about them? Also I would appreciate any advise on any mowers to that are good and what to stay away from. Thanks in advance. Fud

I have a cub cadet 50" cut Zero turn. Wouldn't use anything else after getting the hang of it. It has heavy duty blades .2" thick and 2" wide. Have had it since 2005 with no problems. Cut about 4 acres.
Have cut some pretty rough and big sprouts with it.
Still have the same belt that came on it.

The main wrench guy at work knows mowers and he wants (real bad) one of those new "bad boy" zero turn mowers at TSC. I guess these are super heavy duty with the best built deck and frame in the industry, according to him. $5000 I think.

I would for sure get an industrial grade zero turn for medium to heavy use. Maybe even a diesel Deere or Kubota if you are going to have a business doing this.

An employee of mine just bought a new cub cadet 2100 garden tractor. NICE GARDEN TRACTOR! Much more comfortable than the cub cadet 2544 garden tractor I bought a couple years ago. And I like my 2544.

My neighbor had a Skag (about 25 hp, 60" cut) for 20 years or so. Just traded it off late last season for a Grasshopper. Neighbor gal said it was too hard on her hips to ride it anymore. She mowed faster with that Skag than my JD will go down the road. Did a damn fine job of mowing too.

Business here sells Dixie chopper don"t know much about them except they are supposed to be a very fast mower. I use the tractor type mowers. Have a new kubota gr2120 I bought 2 weeks ago. Nice diesel with 54 inch deck and their glide steer system. All wheel drive and when turning the inside rear tire slows and the other 3 pull it around. Turns sharp and no turf marks. So far so good. First kubota

Hustler are good mowers and we had good luck with Gravely which is now the commercial line for Ariens.

In my area of SW Ohio, a vast majority of the commercial mowers use an Exmark. Other makes are readily available, but Exmark is the most popular. A very particular friend of mine sold his two Grasshoppers and bought two Exmarks. He claims that the deck on the Exmarks is deeper and less likely to clog with damp grass.I am not a dealer, nor do I own an Exmark. My 2 cents.

I have used an Exmark and it was fine to mow with. I bought a Hustler 60 inch cut 24 hp Honda. I have had it 6 years and very few problems at all. I have replaces 2 idler bearings. Thing will fly and mow circles around a tractor type mower. Only thing I would do different is get a larger engine. I cut 1 lot probably 1.5 acres and only do it once a month. Need a little more HP on that lot sometimes because it is heavy fescue and seeding out.

SCAG is about the toughest thing out there. I've had one for 10 years but only use it for my own mowing. About three acres. I see a lot of the commercial landscapers with them and they beat the snot out of them but I think they buy new ones every once in a while although the ones I see don't look new by any means.

Kinda like tractors, having a local dealer means alot. Around here Bad Boys are big sellers along with Skags. A few Exmarks although the dealer is going mostly Bad Boys now. If you want to go up in price there is also a Deere dealer and Kubota. I have a Swisher but it is not a commercial grade and I will likely go to Bad Boy for my next mower.

Fud Up untill my retirement three years ago I sold KUBOTA & EXMARK. In my oppinion they are both a little better mower but both are going to be more expensive also. The shaft drive deck and hydraulic deck lift make the Kubota nice but have had good luck with the Exmarks also. IF YOU PLAN ON USING IT COMERCIAL YOU MIGHT WANT TO SPEN A LITTLE MORE UP FRONT AND GET SOMETHIN HEAVY BUILT.

Ive got an M50 Tank, about 6 years old now. Been flawless except a broken spring on the left side handle. Brother just bought a Husqvarna, Im really impressed with it, but I havent heard anything about them.

Check out Kubota. 0% for 60 months now. Or 500 off cash.
Just priced a zd326 @ 12190 they sure look better engineered and laid out then the others.

Someone told me he bought a new Grasshopper and the deck is much deeper than they used to be and will mow through anything.

I have a Deere 54" zero turn, 25 hp Kawasaki. Basic machine, no extra heavy duty, no whistles or bells. About half the price of an xmark. I'm in my fifth year with it. I mow about 8 acres, much of which is semi-wooded (sticks, pine burrs and straw, roots, sweet gum balls---all hidden in a cloud of dust). I can't imagine that very many people put their mower through much rougher treatment on a regular basis. I put it into places where I really ought to use my tractor and rotary cutter. Point is, that little JD takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. I've only had to replace blades and a belt. I may be wrong, but I just don't see the necessity for a half-inch welded deck on a Humvee chassis.

Side note: I wonder if you folks are as amused as I am about the guys who just have to have a big zero turn mower when they only have a quarter acre lot. They never really get to open it up.

Don t know if you have a Walker dealership close
by but you ought to check them out . Walker s are built in Colorado , excelent mowers.
I used to work on them a few years ago, outstanding machines.

Bingo to what JDSeller said below. The exMark is a good machine.

I researched this issue thoroughly for nearly two years before I bought. I had a Kubota TG1860G but the hydro was crapping and wasn't seviceable, so I knew the time was coming.

I bought a SCAG from a reputable dealer who sells both SCAGs and eXMarks. The eXMark was my second choice. I've been extremely happy with the SCAG but I'm sure the eXMark would have been just as good.

The commercial guys in my area use mostly SCAGS and exMarks. And if you ever watch these guys, they don't exactly baby their machines.

Not meaning to step on anyone's bunions here but nothing in the Cub Cadet line, no matter style or model, can be compared to the SCAGs, eXMarks, Dixie Choppers, etc. Cubs just aren't in the same league.

If you've got a good eXMark dealer, I'd go for it. Why is he pushing the Cub Cadet over the eXMark? Price maybe?

But--it all depends on two things:
How much lawn do you have to mow?
What kinds of reputable dealers are in your area and what do they sell?

My $.02.

I've seen the TANK at a customers house. Only one that i have ever saw. Seems to be well built and he said no problems for several years. Here in PA, most commercial guys are using the Exmarks. I bought new in 2008 and all i've done so far is change oil and sharpen blades on my Lazer Z. By all means, get the model with the most horsepower. You wont regret it!

Fud, If you are getting close to retirement, I would be asking which mower is the most comfortable to drive? Keep in mind you aren't getting any younger. Which mower doesn't require a shower after you mow?

I've been retired for 8 years and all the fast flying ZTR mowers just kill my back and mess with my sinuses.

I mow with a Farmall C and a Ford Jubilee. Both have a 6 ft woods mower on them. I trim up with a 4 ft Husky. Keep in mind too, retirement means you don't have to be in a rush. Save something to do for tomorrow.

I have and have had several and all were good machines. I have
5 now besides my tractor mowers. My most used (favorite) one I
have now is the 44" Hustler with 18 Honda. I put bar lug tires on
it and another for mowing pool (pond) banks.

Two things that you probably want to consider:

Operator comfort, both in ride comfort and position of control
levers. I put cushions on my Hustler, but the tilt of the seat and
location of the levers is perfect. I like the deck where you put
your feed. It's large enough to put a pump up sprayer and go
around and spot spray, or use it as a truck and transport
things....trash bags to the trash can, tools from the shop to the
house for doing a "honey do".

Second thing my Hustler doesn't have but will be on the next
mower I purchase and that's a tilt up deck for cleaning.....my
biggest problem with any mower. In the spring, when the grass
is wet, it is a real pain. Once things dry out later on in the
season it doesn't matter all that much....course tilt up means
removing and servicing/replacing the blades is a no brainer and
saves you having to hook the machine up to a hoist to get at the
underside.

Mark
