Was about to finish mowing today. I made a turn, and saw a fire I had started from a rock strike. It was in the stubble I had just mowed, and I was able to stomp it out. I have a extinguisher on my MF. I better get one for my JD as well. How many of you cary fire extinguishers on your tractors? Not a bad idea. Stan

real good idea and one I never thought of... I have one that I took out of my old jeep that is justv the right rollbar size... I'll see if it's still good...

Good tip..

I started one from hitting a rock about 20 years ago. The bad thing was I was back swathing at the time and went a long winding way amongst some trees and so on before I got turned and headed back. By the time I saw it flames were four feet in the air and smoke was 200 feet. Fortunately I had my Fire Dept. radio with me so I was able to call dispatch and get it toned out, and took the nozzle when the truck got there. I would have needed a 250 GPM pump and 1000 gal. water to put that one out.

I've installed fire extinguishers on both tractors, the ZTR and an engine powered air compressor....hope I never need them.

Ideally, one ought to carry the stainless steels 2 gal water filled ones, better for the farm and cheaper in the long run.Powder has a tendency to cake over time and riding along on a tractor. Make a flapper (that's what we called it in LA...)out of an old semi mudflap, about12-18 by 18-24 inches, mount it between 2 pieces of maetal with a threated piece attached to it to screw metal or wood or fiberglass handle it it, virtually no maintenance and you'll be amazed how it smothers the flame. Anything too big to put out that way is best left to your FD.

Most FDs put foam agent in their 2.5 waters now. It helps the water to penetrate plus the foam helps smoother the fire. They pay big bucks for the stuff, mainly because it is for the fire service, but we can use just plain dish detergent at about 1 cup per 2.5 gal. It makes 2.5 gal. do the job of 5 gal pain water.

Couldn't do that around here - some of the hay I cut I get wet tires while cutting, raking, and baling - on top of a swamp, the grass sits on the stubble and does dry down, but sure don't have to worry about a hay fire starting up from the mower! :)

Did that one day while raking hay. Got lucky- found it the next round and it was between the windrows and only about three feet around. Glad it wasn't windy that day.

Yeahh, forgot about that one, we used it in Louisiana, about 2-3 bottles some cheap stuff in 2500 gal, came in a yellow bottle with green writing, something Octa....??
Thanks for reminding me, fellas!!
