I have been enjoying watching the videos of Steam engine shows. Some of the remarks really bother me. yes it was dangerouse work with long open belts, rotating open shafts. I worked around these machines at a very young age.(6-7 yrs old)respect for machiner was instilled in your mind at a very young age as you worked with your father an other. My father had a saying"For every accident here is a root cause" "somebody goofed and did nt use good judgement"

My dad had a poster in his office years ago. It was a cartoon of an occurring accident. The caption read, "Accidents don't just happen, they are caused".

It's a mathmatical equasion. The square root of acidents + injury = Carelesness. I too was running equipment at the same age. So far a broken foot, jack broke, and broken wrist, tipped over a step ladder when on first rung. LOL.
I lost a good friend in a forage harvester acident, know two guys that lost arms in pickers, and a young fellow killed while cleaning a barrel spreader last year. Yes machinery is dangerous, and care needs to be taken using it.

I've worked around agriculture and heavy equipment for more years than I care to admit. Have seen and known of many people hurt or worse. Carelessness causes most of them. I don't care how careful you are, sometimes, things happen that no-one could have anticipated. You need to be as safe as you can. All of those slogans and phrases didn't come to be for no reason.

Having young children running AG equipment is not right. Picking crops, fine. Shucking corn, fine. But not running a steam tractor with an open belt PTO....????
When you lose a child due to either an accident or sudden death from SIDS or heart malfunction is a terrible experience.

What tree stump have you been hiding. We were taught how to operate farming equipment at an early age we didnt wear headphones listening to BS get real. How about all these kids driving 4 wheelers ect that their parents dont have any common sense to by them in the first place and the list goes on and on.
