Dodge Cummins Quit

2001 Dodge Cummins truck died on me getting on the highway this afternoon. Quit all at once. Checked fuses, all good. I am thinking it probably is that VP44 pump gone bad. Truck has only 90K miles. Any Ideas?

With out checking a couple things , it is only a guess . But i would say the lift pump is also gone for the injection pump to fail.

Turn the ignition key on 3 times. Don't turn the engine over but just turn the key to that point. You will get a series of codes and this will tell you what happened. Did you notice anything going on before it failed? Mine would get a dead pedal but would come out of it if you put the clutch all the way in and then let it out. Sounds weird but that is what resets the pump. Mine did this for quite awhile before one day it wouldn't come out of it and I limped home 35 mph with it. Was it hard to start when warm? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge on it? If not, you should, some pump rebuilders will not warranty the pump if you don't have one and put a new lift pump on when you replace the injector pump. Put your codes up and I will tell you what they mean.

I have an '02 dodge with the cummins. You can pull the codes by turning the ignition switch on and off three times in a row. On the third try the codes will flash across where the odometer displays. You should be able to look up the codes and get an idea if it is the vp44. Mine went out at about 100k. I replaced both the vp44 and the fuel pump. I also installed a fuel pressure gauge to keep an eye on the pressure since that is usually what causes the vp44 to go out since it depends on adequate fuel pressure to cool/lubricate the vp44. Not too bad a job just time consuming. There use to be a real good you tube video that shows exactly how and what tools are needed to replace the vp44.

Without checking anything i would guess the lift pump went out and then starved the VP and fried it. If it were mine I would look at putting another fuel system on it like an AirDog or a FASS system. Have bigger lines, remote mounted fuel filter and water sperator with a lot better filtraion than a factory filter. Put a gauge in the cab to so you can keep an eye on the fuel pressure. If you put a factory style pump back on it and it goes out again you will be able to tell it before it gets the VP if you look at a gauge in the cab.

My 2001 Cummins Had a similar problem. It would limp along. It died and wouldn't start. I had it towed and it was the injector pump. It had 150000 miles on it.
