removing farmall h manifold

I need help. I've never done this before, but I need to change the manifold gasket on my h farmall and I'm concerned about breaking one of the studs. I'd appreciate any directions for removing the rusted nuts. thank you
 

Don't worry about it! They need to be replaced anyway. Just crank on them and break them off. I haven't done it myself but some posters on here have just blown the broken ones out with the flame wrench, no problem.
 
Put some pen. oil on the nut's let it set 10 min. Sometime's you can use a lite impact gun set real light, so it will shake the nut. There suppose to be brass nut's, good luck.
 
You will probably get lots of different suggestions. I like to heat almost red hot then let it cool slowly ,then squirt it and the next day turn them off.But after so many years of never being taken off ... Now if the manifold has been leaking for some time it may not have a flat gasket surface anymore and will need to be milled flat again. If you have a milling machine I can tell you how to hold the manifold for machining. If you have a large belt sander you can flatten it that way too.

Fire up the oxy-acetylene torch and heat those nuts cherry red, let 'em cool a bit and then begin dousing them with your favorite flavor of penetrating oil. Once the smoke has cleared and those nuts are cool to the touch, put a six point socket on them and see what happens. You might get lucky and they'll all come right off, but most likely you will find that even though they came off relatively easily, the nuts and the studs will still need to be replaced.
 
First see if they will come out, don't use too much pressure. The last 5 manifolds I have removed did not present a problem. Actually they are usually the easiest rusted nuts to get off.
 
I have pulled apart 6 frozen H motors and also took the manifold off the head on my H when I did a head gasket on it a couple of years ago. I have never broken a stud yet while removing the manifold nuts. I have broken one or two when trying to remove the studs from the head, but you can leave them unless they are really badly deteriorated.

If you have enough room to get to the nuts, go to NAPA and get a nutcracker that will fit the size of nuts. Use if very carefully to just start splitting the nut and then you should be able to turn it off with a wrench. If the studs aren't rusted, just run a die down on them to clean the threads up. If you don't know what a nutcracker is, NAPA will. A good auto parts store should carry them.
 
You might be surprised. My H sat outside for 15 years, I decided to rebuild everything, and was afraid of the rusted nuts. They were really really bad looking. Put PB Blaster on, waited a day or two, and they came right off, everyone, no problem.
 
Mine came right loose when I pulled the manifold, but heating them up cherry red would be the safe approach. Make sure all gasoline is turned off if using torch around engine.
