This morning,I bought a "John Deere" 6 row corn cultivator off of Craig's list.Whats the world comming to....?

Red paint, and a 39 cent brush, as soon as possible. In the immortal words of Stan Laurel 'and no one will be none the wiser'.
My once blue Ford mower happened to start changing into MF gray and red today, the rest of the evidence should be gone tomorrow....

I bought a 4 row JD 1240... ANd today I bought a JD hammer mill. I did luck out cause I found a belt pulley for a 9N in the barn too and the lady threw it in with the sale. Just don't tell those reds they are pulling a green.

It just goes to show that even an old tractor guy can learn a new trick. I did the brand switch years ago.

We had IH and JD both when I was growing up. My Grand Dad bought a IH 1466 brand new in 1972. That tractor was a great work horse, 20.8 x 38 axle duals and 540/1000 PTO. It just was a very good running tractor.

After I had gotten home from the service and had a few years of very good returns farming My wife and I decided to go ahead and step up to a good tractor. We had started out with pure junk that I had to make work. We ordered a new IH 1086. It was delivered in Dec. 1979. That was the sorriest tractor I have ever owned. It rode rough, the transmission shifters where junk from the get go, those back wards doors, the list could go on forever. My wife refused to even drive it after the first week we did field work. So after we got the crops planted in the spring I advertised it for sale. It only had 250 hours on it. I was able to get a little more than I gave for it. Equipment was still riding high before Carter,s embargo sunk the ship. I lucked out and made it through harvest with the old stuff we had plus rented a tractor for fall tillage work. I found a year old JD 4440 after the embargo dropped the grain market for less than I had given for the IH 1086. It was night and day better. That JD 4440 was as good as the IH 1466 in just getting the work done. Still have it today.

I have not owned anything newer than an IH 66 series since. Even they lose the luster after using the JD with the SGB.

Around here, JD is more prominent than IH, even though there"s been a long history of both brands" dealers in several adjacent towns. Usually both in each town. But, when plowing was still popular here, most green tractors pulled the red reset plows. Most red tractors pulled green balers. Farmers bought what worked, although sometimes it was painful for the entrenched ones.

Our family did almost the same thing. In 1978 uncle and cousin each bought new ih 886s. Except for all the things you mentioned they gave pretty good service and were kept. However as time went on cousin bought a 1066 and then a 1466. The 1466 was the best running and handiest tractor I ever ran. It was open air all the others had cabs.

Back when everyone was preparing seedbeds by 'plowing and disking', lots of folks around 'here' thought IH made better disks and pulled them with green tractors.

I believe it's Sound Guard Body - referring to the cab. I've driven one or two... and wasn't all that impressed. For one thing, I like to be able to get in or out both sides of the cab. It is MUCH quieter than the cabs on IH 66 series tractors though.

The good thing is that you should be able to get shoes for it out of Shoup or some other mail order place. That way you won't be seen hang'n out at the JD dealer. I got caught in a bind one time and had to go get some parts for my 6 row 7000 at the local green dealer once. After the kid rolled his eyes and said "I think those are still in the computer but if not we might have a book around here some where" I make sure to keep a box full of chains, close'n wheels, ect at the house from sourses other than the local green outlet store.

10-4 for the two doors. In my 4230 if you threw your empty pop can down on the floor on right side of cowl, there was no way you could get at it to throw it out. You ether had to open that service window and go around to grab it and then back up into cab to latch the window again or go to shop and find a four foot strap, put in vise and bend a hook on end. Then reach through drivers door and kinda hook it out.
