OT: Should YT forums have a spell check option added??

Just curious and wondering what others think about adding a spell check option to the review page of any messages, ads being posted. It already tells you with the red squiggly line below the word that the spelling is wrong, but does not give any help/suggestion on how to correct it. (I, for once, would also profit from it.)

I think it is an interesting idea, but there are many words that are in common parlance on YT that do not appear in most spell check programs, so I wonder if it might be more of a nuisance than a help in some ways.

If you get the red squiggly line, I think you have it already. Right click on the word and it should give options of the word you were looking for.

If you are using Internet Explorer then use "ieSpell". It's a freebie. Goggle it.

Wouldn't hurt a thing. When my computer crashed,I had to download a spell check that doesn't work as easy as the old one. Makes me less likely to use it,then everybody reading pays the price.

As others have said most newer browsers already have it.
What I would like to see though is a smartness checker. If what you are about to post is really dumb the whole post will show up with the red squiggley lines. Then when you right click on it it will post something that will smarten you up.
Of course everything I write would probably get those red lines...

Hoo karz iff evreethang iz spelt rite? Sertennlee knot mee. Moste du knot kar. Onlee seemz 2 earitate thoze wit OCD.

I got into a pi$$ing match with Dave2 awhile back over spelling corrections. Actually, I "got my nnalert in a wad", according to him.

I never correct spelling unless it would be important to make Google work- I think the specific instance was some guy wanting info on his Kabota. Guess I needn't have bothered- I googled "Kabota" and it came back, "Do you mean Kubota" and gave about a zillion hits.

I'm a good speller, but I'd better be, because I write for a living. Mis-spellings in postings don't bother me. Its the ones that are indecipherable that are a little irritating, and I don't think spell check would help them- you have to be kind of close for it to work.

I'd say don't waste your time with it, unless its important to you to have it right.

Eureka! Sooooo mea culpa! Honestly never tried to right-click.... Thanks for point'n it out!!!
Yours truly, Ralph in Oklahoma......>

I'm a poor speller & lazy proofreader.... Most of my posts come late at nite with the wife sleeping beside me, so can't see the keyboard with my fat hunt & peck fingers.

I've found most spell checkers make odd suggestions - wife's iPad comes up with some doozies - and some other forums have checkers that just don't work with my particular operating system/setup.

Didn't know there were any squiggly red lines on this site, I run in the old classic mode?

So, I'd probably not adapt to a spell checker anyhow.

I do appologise to all for my poor typing & proofing, but hard to teach an old dog new tricks....

I don't have a problem with errors in names,
places, or oddly spelled words . What stands
my nerves on edge is the deliberate misspelling
of common words , as in probably written as
prolly. That is not an error , it is plain
laziness or can't be bothered to type it right.
My sentence structure stinks , but I can
usually spell the words.

I keep an old dictionary on the computory desk and use it quite often. I too hate it when people do not use good sentence structure and run their sentences togather. Also what do some of the abbrevations meam such as (roll) and I think (llic) is another one. Most I can figure out except for those two. Armand

Paul, when you type a reply or new message text and you misspell a word (try it deliberately) it will be underlined in a red squiggly line. (Just) learned that if you right-click it, it will suggest corrections (see "Eureka").

We have a spell checker called Buick and Deere in place,Just spell some wrong,he will jump on it

You could type your reply in MS works or word, spell check, copy and paste it on YT. If you can't figure out how to copy, try the old school way, control C, Control V is paste.

Who really cares is you can't spell, I can't either. Coming down with a bad case of CRS.

This forum is supposed to be about tractors and not spelling so ask a question about your tractor and dont worry about how someone spells

Gene, That about an ignorant answer as someone will read on this forum. So if some 12th grader cannot read or spell correctly either, it's OK to allow them to graduate? Do you like to read books and the newspaper with poor spelling? Probably not.....

Maybe if people would learn to spell hydraulic correctly, the search engine would come in handy. How many variations have you seen? Probably about a half dozen ways.

If you get the red squiggly line, right click and find the correct spelling, left click and move on. Not hard to do.

bob

Don't know what the (llic) meams , but the (Roll ) comes from using the smiley feature on modern view...Meams roll eyes

It would be nice, but most probably wouldn't use it. It is pretty hard sometimes trying to figure out what someone is talking about when all the words are misspelled. If I run across one anymore, I don't even bother trying to figure out what they are trying to say, just move on to another post. Not wasting my time.

Spell check would help in a lot of cases when a word isn't misspelled into a legitimate word. But in some cases a word can be misspelled into a real word, but with a different meaning.
One such word I see a lot is "quiet" misspelled into "quite". Spell-check wouldn't catch that one. Nor would it catch "yore" used instead of "your".

Sometimes words are misused in which spell-check wouldn't catch those either. A very common example of this would be the misuse of "they're", "their", & "there". Or "your" & "you're".

IIRC means if I recall correctly.... dunno about llic (maybe a typo....should have used spell-checker
......LOL, LOL,...!!!! Sorry couldn't resist!

I truly did not know about the right click of a reddish underlined word... see Re: Eureka. I am amazed, however, how this topic get soooooo much feedback, both ways. Actually just wanted to know for myself... as described in the original post.
Nonetheless, thanks for every input: past, present, and future.
Have a great Sunday, everyone! "Ralphie in Oklahoma."

Y?-Hale !,know,.. not on tha forum respnses , thats what gives 'em charactar,ya mite ruin the good nature intent of some a these fellas,...however it would be nice in the classified and on your stories and project journals ,and others

Makes you lazy, besides you won't learn the correct spelling because you will be prone to let the machine do the work.
Make the effort and consult the dictionary..

When you turn out the bedroom light, believe it is night or could that be lite.

At the supermarket pick up a lite beer, what does that mean. the opposite to heavy?

I can't believe Dave2 had the audacity to jump on someone about one's spelling of a word when he spells "probably" as "prolly" every time he types it. I know because I got his "Victoria's Secrets" in a wad when I told him prolly was incorrect spelling. I got called down on this site for asking a youngster that didn't use hardly any capitalization or punctuation marks in his question if the school he attended taught grammar.

Yes but let b&d misspell some words(which he has done) and he will have an excuse such as his spellchecker broke(yea right) or he was in a hurry.

Yeah but how do you know when you are wrong? I have spell check as part of my apple and when I goof it smacks me and if I want a dictionary, it has one conveniently located on my desktop.

Mark

Interesting responses.

I don't have much trouble with slang spellings of words, like "prolly"- think I've been guilty of it myself. In short responses I sometimes "write like I talk"- such as, "Yeah, that'll getcha every time."

Interesting about the red squiggly line- I have that on Word, but not on this board.

If one uses the 'Google Chrome' browser it will notify by the underline and give recommendations for corrections. However, the original must be close to a proper word. 'Prolly' shows Polly, drolly brolly, and prolix.

I think this is just a reflection of how bad our schools are !
Spell check won't fix anything.
Also people are just too highstrung and too quick to jump down everyones throats. Take a chill pill !!!!!!!!

That or he'll just call some one a "dumb as a brick hick" if'n they type someth'n he don't agree with.

Spell check if used correctly gives a poster the opportunity to correct errors in spelling if used correctly without the aid of a dictionary no matter if you chose to believe that FACT or not. Some posters seem to think that just because someone is trying to point out the errors in their statement or information that's considered "jumping down their throats".

BTW do you have a Doctors prescription you can give the members for a "chill pill"??????

It helps you to avoid the error in the future and helps to add
authenticity (didn't use spell check Ha.) to your reply. I mean the
reader is reading along and gets distracted by the poor use of
grammar and thinks that if the guy can't even express himself in
a professional manner, why should I pay attention to any of the
rest of his rambling..........not to be confused with one of my pet
peeves, the air-heads at checkout counters that go nuts if you
give them several pieces of money so that your bill for $36.64
gives you $5 in return for 2ea 20's, 1 ea 1 and 64 cents in
change rather than $3 and 36 cents.......but I was trying to get
rid of the !@#$%^& change in the first place.

My 2c,
Mark

Well now i see other people have the same opinion as mine so they are ignorant also. THIS IS A TRACTOR SITE.

.......and besides ALL that, sometimes you have to misspell to get past the site controller, as in who gives a sheet?

I don t have a problem with figuring out what people are trying to say...I m usually looking for help here or suggestions and don t mind a misspelled word or two my. I think we ll be fine.
