What oil is thicher than 10w30 with the same API rating? If thats the way to say it. What I want to do is put thicker oil in my lawn mower hydro trans axle, it calls for 10w30 but when it gets hot it slips. Any ideas. Thanks, Jim

15-40 is thicker, but may not stop the slipping. Give it a whirl. There is a clutch additive for GM differentials that can assist clutch friction. Jim

Use Mobil One 10W30, and mix in about 1/3 Mobil One 15W50. That will give you a lot less thinning out when hot and very good film strength. I have a large Hustler commercial zero turn which specifies in detail to use no oil in the hydraulics other than Mobil One 15W50 and then 3 1/2 ounces of Hustler's additive package, which they call Lubrizoil (spelling is guess). I have yet to see friction material in a swash plate axial pump typically seen in hydrostatic mowers.
Put straight weight 60 Amsoil motorcycle oil in the transaxle of the LX188. As long as the cooling fins are clean, she don't slip.

I have a garden tractor with a Hydro-Gear trans axle. I called manufacture and was told to use SH/CD 20-50 SYN. oil.

Thanks, I will try the 60w and see if that works. I would like to get as much mowing out of this thing as possible.

Some of the synthetic oils are very slippery due to friction modifiers. Try using a motorcycle oil rated "MA"; these oils are intended for motorcycles with wet clutches. They're available in 10W-40 and 20W-50 viscosities.

Thanks again for all the ideas. Thats why I like this site, You can always get a good answer. I put 20w50 in it and its like a new lawn mower!
