OT VW / Wix oil filters

Here's a question- I stopped at the local carquest to get oil & filter for my 03 passat, 1.8T, and they came out with a Wix 51393 which is a little taller & much skinnier than what's on my car, from VW, right now and every other filter I've gotten for it.

I got home and did a little back figuring by looking up Hastings numbers(LF517) and Baldwin(B114), and the filter that crosses then is a 51191 to both brands.

The specs look the same, and I'm thinking the skinnier filter will be easier to remove (have to remove air intake hose to get the current one out) But at the same time I just don't want to use the wrong filter. What do you guys think?

I've had something like that happen twice. Ran our Honda 200,000 miles on the
OEM filters bought at the dealer, then they changed them to tall & skinny
rather than short & fat, now I get filters wherever they're on sale. We
bought a Dodge Caravan, first time I had the dealer change the oil and take
care of some odds and ends. I changed the oil next time with filter and oil
from Autozone, the oil filter they sold me was different than the one I took
off. Went back to Autozone and had them re-check, no their book says it's
right, also checked O'Reilys and Wal-mart all indicated I had the right
filter. Figured it out about 4 oil changes later, Chrysler changed the filter
between 06 & 07 and the dealer used the 06 filter on it.

I have lost track but I believe there are four
filters that will fit Chevy V8, and at least 6 that
will fit a Mopar V6. I took the skinny filter off
of the Jeep and put on a big filter(it was on the
shelf)it worked fine till the front axle put a hole
in it.

The only thing that gets me, is Wix is the only one that shows that size filter for my car. Baldwin and Hastings both show the larger diameter filter, and when I cross their numbers they both come up with the same filter number.

I guess I can give it a shot, just makes a guy scratch his head. Atleast it's a Wix, and not a Fram...
