Early this morning, I started a thread seeking advice on a small chain saw to be used for trimming, to replace a cantankerous 14" Homelite. I have two larger saws, a 16" Stihl MS250 and a 20" Poulan.

From comments from ya'll, and research on my part, it kinda boiled down to a tossup between an Echo CS310 and a Stihl MS170. My research also revealed that our local John Deere dealer, long into small engines along with large farm machinery, had become a Stihl dealer and was seriously getting into the chain saw business. I walked into the showroom and was confronted by an entire wall of Stihl chain saws on display. Everything from the MS170 to thousand dollar pro models.

I checked out an MS170 and liked it. Considering the John Deere dealership with Stihl parts and service is 3 miles from my house, and a full service Echo dealer is 25 miles, it actually became kind of a no-brainer. I went with a Stihl MS170.

I used it briefly this evening and wasn't disappointed. Thanks for all the input. If it hadn't been for some of the comments from ya'll, I might have overlooked the Stihl.

Good for you...... Looking at the prices for the 170 on line, I am really asking myself if a top handle saw is worth twice the money..... My tree climbing days are over and that top handle could make me do sumpin stupid anyway.... That good idea grenade I had with the electric saw kinda blew up in my pocket yesterday.(cut a cord)......

Just don't take that JD-Stihl, to your local Stihl dealer, for repair! There is a big split, between them that was long time still dealers, and the newbies, the JD dealers. From my experience, service is better anywhere, but at a JD dealer!

Anything Stihl I've ever owned (even a new MS290) has died a horrible death....but then again, so has anything JD I've ever had....

Like James said, we've had good performance from the Stihls. Wore the first 170 out after several years of hard use. Second MS170 is the most used saw on the farm.

This is what I'm working on, a humongous 60 year old elm tree in the middle of the farm yard. It croaked during the last year, and since people park under it, renter's kids play around the yard, etc, I recently began getting the willies whenever the wind came up.

I hired a professional tree service to drop it on the ground, now I'm cleaning up the mess. There's a lot of firewood in that old gal.

My 82 year old dad loves his MS170, he had one of those and a larger Stihl, he traded the larger saw in on another MS170. Soon to be 83, he still cuts all the wood himself to heat the small earth sheltered home he and mom live in in MN. He finally gets help with the major splitting, but does most of it himself. Only takes 3-4 cords per year.
