$#%@#%@ Grand Cherokee Transmission

Always heard Jeep drivetrains were bulletproof. Apparently
they quit doing that. Miss MN's 05 laredo with 3.7 started
getting stuck in 3rd. Trans shop fixed it with some speed
sensor and plate. Had to drop or atleast get at the valve body.
$687 bucks. I know thats not too terrible for transmissiin work
but reading all the complaints online about these...my blood
is just boiling. When i find out exactly what they fixed and
why i will let you know.

Just traded the wife's 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee off a few weeks ago. It had 104,000. When it hit the 100,000 mark it seemed like it just started falling apart. Transmission included! My '07 Chevrolet Impala with 101,000 is no different now than it was with 20,000 miles. We went back to a GM vehicle and never looked back. She has a Buick Enclave now and loves it.

Oh yeah, I remember when you were shopping awhile back. This Jeep has 114k miles on it. Hope we have better luck than you guys did.

I wouldn't hold my breath.....may be time to dump it.

Good Luck

they all break . Wait till you get a Trailblazer with a 4.2 inline.Very common to burn valves. I have close to grand in parts . Got to pull pan off to get front cover off. oh yea, front axle and rack have to come off also .

Well heck we've only had it 11 months. Put 14k on in that
time. Kinda like it! I hope I can prove ya wrong : )

I have a 97 model that has 148K on it. No trans problems YET. Rear end has been howling like he?? since 40k miles but the radio will drown that out if you turn it up. In line 6 engine. New AC Comp, new radiator, new power steering pump in the last year.

Apples and oranges. 97 has an ATOD and the 04 used a 42RE for the smaller engine or a 45RFE with the bigger one. Some of the 97s also had the RF 3 (3 sped) which was/is the same as the old 904 with a new name.

Hope you prove me wrong too.......but I'm not holding my breath......

Chrysler has a long history of being hit and miss on trannies. Anything from the 904 that got a bad reputation because a tranny designed to go behind an smaller engine (318&the slant 6) in a mids sized car got put into full sized pickup and vans, Then was raised from the ashes when the Dakota came out (not bad) untill the mated an overdrive to it. They had several years with the Caravan that had catastrophic failures to the Intrepid tranny that had as many as 28 mods in one production year. But then again it seems they have had a good tranny in the Caravans for a number of years and they did make the 727 too.

That ain't the only one to have problems. SIL works for a new car dealer in ND. When they still sold Dodge he got one in to work on.......diesel with a leaking front main. First thing the book said was "remove frnt bumper" and said 23 hours. He was a happy camper when the owner (GMC, Caddy, Chevy, Buick, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge) dumped the last three. We have a Suburban that lost a fuel pump at 250K and the tranny at 258K. We pull farm trailers with it besides using it as a daily driver.

My workplace had a Grand Cherokee and it was in the shop five times for warranty work on the transmission. We also had the door hinges wear out; the ignition switch wore out; it went through three starters in just a few years and an air conditioner compressor and the electric fan relay switch failed. By 76,000 miles, the engine was using 2 quarts of oil a week. This was a state rig and got regular maintenance always. They finally surplussed it out.

Friends got one with 200,000 miles on it gifted to him, he ran it another 60,000 miles, had to trade out of it because he got tired of doing a fuel pump every three months, Has a Subaru Forester now, at least the enviro-wackos don't throw stuff at his car anymore.
