Hey guys:

Last fall (November) I went to start the 1020 to feed hay.Got half way up the driveway and it died. Just got started working on it again. Changed coil,points/condenser,rotor,and cap. I even cleaned the dirt out of the sediment bowl. Fuel pump is pumping fuel to carb, old gas changed and new installed. Every once in awhile it seems to smoke white and will pop through exhaust or through intake of carb.

When changing points does engine have to be re-timed? According to manual you time engine to #1 cylinder with the S lined up on balancer. I found the mark but with engine there, you cannot find top of piston with screwdriverin sparkplug hole. But manual also states like with that balancer mark lined up, rotor button should be 50* before the cylinder its going to hit on; which seems to be right.

What else do i need to check.

You need to use a volt meter and with the points open and the ignition switch on check for voltage
on your coil. Should have voltage on both small terminals. If you have voltage here take a clean Q-tip dipped in alcohol and clean the points then see if the engine will start. Hal

Might check your tappet adjustments also. Had one that ran just fine and went to start it one morning and it missed on one cylinder. Tried everything and finally decided to check the tappets. One of the valves had gotten stuck and bent the pushrod. New rod and some adjustments to the rest and it ran fine again. Not sure why it decided to stick just like that over night.
