O.T. - Tracing shorts in fence

Good afternoon.

I have a couple of miles of high-tensile single-strand wire that"s electrified (rest is non-electrified high-tensile weave underneath, wire runs on top). Every so often something will fall and short-circuit the wire (limbs, trees, even deer jumping over and tangling it). Is there any meaningful way of narrowing down where the short is remotely without having to walk the entire line (good workout but gets old after a while)?

Thanks much.

they make a tester that not only shows a short but an arrow on wich way it is -- mines in my 4wheeler right now -- im sure you can google it and find it

More powerful fence charger will power through more shorts. A knowledgeable New Zelander once told me that powerful fence chargers were developed for just that purpose......the theory has worked well for me!

I to have alot of fence.. double electric with ground in the middle.. I have couple places along the way that is "spliced" on purpose. I can unsplice and check so I know at least what area to look.

Everybody asked me why I was going to all the trouble and expense of stringing 60 rolls of new barbed wire 11 years ago. That's why.

(quoted from post at 19:07:44 04/27/12) We spent 2 hours today nailing wire back up and checking for shorts. An anual spring event.

Spent a good bit of time yesterday taking pictures of cut fences and tiretracks/trails thru fields.... making a package for the cops.....
Seems I got a special friend that gets tanked up and drives around cutting fences..... Finally found enough stuff that I can turn in and some folks saw him in the area......

(quoted from post at 16:00:04 04/27/12) Beat me too it!!!!

Best $100 I have ever spent on fence'n for sure.

If I could just figure out how to change the battery... Better yet FIND the battery.... I's either blind or stupid.......

I see they now have fence chargers with a remote, like a tv remote. Took me a couple minutes to figure out why anyone would need a remote, then it occurred to me while thinking of the last time I had to untangle a short about a half mile from the charger, lol...
