Plowing/Discing Question

I just plowed under some clover/peas/wheat mix and also some rye. Is it better to let the ground dry for a day or two or just go ahead and disc it now? It wasn't too wet to plow it. Thank you.

Larry

If the dirt sticks to the disc or it you grab a fist full and can make it into a ball that wants to hold tight together it is not dry enough.

Depends on how dry it was when you plowed. If it's as dry as what I plowed yesterday you could disc immediately. If it was on the wet side, then wait until the top of the ground dries. As long as it's not sticking to your disc you should be OK.

Correct and we could plow in morning and at noon was dry enough to go disking till was done, then back to plow for rest of evening and till noon next day and start disking again. Wait to long and disk will just ride on top as 2 days of drying just might do.

If you are not in a hurry to plant a new crop let it lay a couple of weeks, perhaps with one or two good rains on it to feather it out. It will disk really nice at that time.

When you plow-down a cover crop, it is advisable to use a "Drag" over it, or a cultipacker, to settle the soil..before you disc it..
You will not turn up nearly as much, if you do..
We always used our Soil Surgeon, the 1st time over..it is a type of Drag-Pan with many "U-Shaped" knives under it..really makes a huge difference, when using Older, smaller equipment..
