The problem was me

Went out to bush hog for the first time this year and as usual, the shear bolt broke right away. For some reason, I have to put in a new bolt at the stat of every year but it usually last all year. Anyway, did not have a bolt on hand so after a trip to the hardware store, thought iwas good to go for the day. Ran about 10 feet and boke the shear bolt when it dawned on me that I bought grade 2 bolts no grade 5. Back to town for the right bolts then ran all afternoon. Could have saved time and a trip by getting the right ones to begin with.....oh well, that was the worst thing that happened yesterday so all was well.

I always use soft bolts. With all the hidden fire ant hills in the weeds I'd rather shear a lot of bolts (and I do) than break a gear. TDF

On.iest trouble with using grade 2 instead of using grade 5 is that grade 5 will snap off relatively clean. By using a grade 2, it will egg the hole out in your shaft and collar because it kind of smears off rather than snapping clean. While it doesn't really hurt too much at first, after a while you'll have to beat the leftover bolt segment out of the shaft because it forms to the egg shaped hole on both ends.

I have noticed that the recommended grade is different for different machines as well as at different points on a machine. It is also important that they be good and tight as the support of the surrounding material is needed as well as the friction of the two faces. The operators manual will sometimes give a torque value. Checking the operator's manual will also usually reveal that you are advised to remove the pin after storage, and make the two sides rotate against each other before reinstalling the bolt.

Depends where you're at...

We barely had anything resembling a winter here in central Texas. The weeds are waist high here. I'm trying to get my hog fixed now so I can top my pasture and let the good grass come on.
