O?T Corrosion on aluminum wheels

Recently put tires on my wifes car. On the inside of the wheels was what I would consider heavy corrosion. The (chrome?) plating was coming off in sheets.

My questions for the experts are: Why is the corrosion only on the back side of the rim when the front looks perfect? Why is the corrosion way more severe under where the plating was flaking? Would some kind of paint help or just let the oxide form and leave it alone?

Thanks for the help.

Brad

If it is deep enough to measure, the wheels may be toast and dangerous.
If it is, say, pitting, and not deep, sanding it out and cleaning it entirely to good chrome is necessary. Once clean, I wouild use an epoxy primer, and a color coat to prevent further corrosion. It will not stop unless taken back to the raw metal. Many aluminum wheels use alloy with copper in it that enhances corrosion but improves strength. Clean and prime and protect. Jim

If you have full aluminum wheels (rims) then I would get them stripped and then anodized. This would cost $100 at a plating/anodizing place. If the pitting and corrosion isnt too bad.

Anodizing is a sodium hydroxide process that instantly creates a coat of aluminum oxide that is a protective layer. Looks nice too.

Dismount the tires, have the wheels glass beaded and have a bodyshop apply 2 coats of clear coat. That's what the factory does. It provides protection to the aluminum and seals any small air leaks.

Had aluminum wheels on 94 olds. Had a flat tire about twentythousand miles. At 60,000 I ran over something on road and blew tire. The man that fixed the tire told me the first repairman had put the wrong wheel weights on and it had pitted and pealed the rim starting at the wheel weight.

I live in Iowa and we of course have problems with salt corroding aluminim wheels. My neighbor told be they can be repaired but do not have any personal experience.
Your tire store (not big box store) might be able to help you.

Wheels have a clear coat on them.Road salt will eat alloy wheels. They go bad around balance weights.
