OT- Killing blackberries

With the sprayer tip, thought I'd mention another, for blackberries. Given to me by a little old lady, who was too frail to wield a machete or a sprayer. She seemed almost embarassed to tell me about it, because it sounded so ridicuous.

Go up to a blackberry patch, with an anvil or bypass hand pruner in one hand and a cup of pure Roundup (or equivalent) in the other. Cut each down-pointing vine, and after you do, dip it in the cup of Roundup. Easy to see where you've been, by the cut ends.

Next spring, all the ones you've dipped, and a lot of others from the same root, will be dead. Sometime that summer, get grandson to come whack away the dead ones, so you can get to the few remaining live ones. Repeat process, and thats the end of the blackberries.

Sort of the Senior Citizen way to deal with blackberries. I thought it sounded too good to be true, but it actually works.

There is a brush and shrub killer that if you just get a medicine dropper and drop a drop or two on the leaves, it'll kill them also. I use roundup to killing wild morning glory by dropping one drop on a leaf. Kills them right to the root.

I drive a long ways just to pick and can blackberries on the spot. Wife likes to bring some home for later. Makes great jam. Bud

There is a difference between a good, berry bearing patch, and an over-run field. Sometimes a person doesn't want a field to be taken over with brush. Maybe they want to convert it back to hay or row crops and dont want brush and blackberries taking over.

A weed is defined as any plant growing in an unwanted place.

Bud, drive over here to the Puget Sound and you can have all you want for free plus you can use my stove and canner.

I don't know why you would want to do that But I feel like I just lost a family member.

I love black berries. As a diabetic, I have found that eating many or most fruits, natural sugars, helps regulate my blood sugar levels. I found that black berries are helpful. Right now are going for $2.99 half pint at the store, and have hit $3.99 for half pint. I quit buying at $2.50 half pint, ad wouldn't even pay that if I wasn't diabetic, but at least I'm not taking any medication for it. I just monitor blood sugar levels, and if they go up, don't eat that anymore, or so much, and bring them right back down. I've always loved fruit, just eat more of it now, not overdoing it, and all but cut out refined sugar. You might be missing out on $$$. Is up to you.

Good luck,

Mark

Now that's funny, right there. . .

Its sure nothing personal, Ron- I assure you. Perhaps I'll observe a reflective moment before I attack the next patch of those pesky things.

I've got plenty of black berries and copper heads at my place. It's looking to be a banner year for both as well.
