Okay I seen the posts on here about spraying weeds.I would like to find some thing that I can spray our fence lines with to kill the grasses and small brush that Could be sprayed every other year or better.Right now I spray every year with round up and brush killer. This is to keep the weeds and brush away from the electric fence .Its only 2ft on each side of the fence so I do not care if the PH oc sodium is high.

Don't know what they use, but the local electrical company hires the ROW sprayed and whatever it is kills ALL VEGETATION, including trees.

Sahara" kills from in the soil. Has to be watered in or rained on after spraying, but mine has held up for two years on fence rows.

best i ever saw was phone co used Morton water softener salt around cable splice boxes...NOTHING grew there for 4-5 years.

Might ought to use some 2-4-D. It takes care of the bushes and grass in your fence rows! Thats we what we use.

Sorry Old Bob you are correct!! It does just kill bushes! Sorry about that! I had a brain fart! We always use round up spraying fences.

ell, sort of right. Says right on the bottle label, "do not use on desirable ornamental turf grasses such as Buffalo & St. Augustine".

My message won't answer your question, it's more of a question itself:

Why would you want to kill the grass? That leaves a ribbon of bare ground, where weeds just naturally will germinate & always forever more be a problem. As well if you don't have flat land can be an erosion issue.

Many people want to kill off the broadleafs and tree stuff, but leave the grass grow, so that there is very little need for sprays once the problem gets cleared up.

A fence should be able to be built that grass won't interfere with.

I'd use some of the good and persistant broadleaf/tree killers, and try to get the grass to grow extra good in the fenceline to hold back the stemmy weeds from being a problem.

Others have good answers for what you want to do.

It's hard to get a chemical to last for more than one year in the soil, and not have it be an environmental problem, so those types of herbicides are rare and need licences and such to apply..... Those are the things that show up in well water, fish, and so forth, and are regulated for good reason. Be careful with these long-lasting items, they truely are a different sort of thing to be handling. Here's where I start liking the salt, lemon juice, and vinegar ideas better in the hands of common folk. :) Those long-lasting herbicides are a threat to us all if not handled carefully.

Very similar, think only the label is different, same chemical.

Here is BASF's version, check out the different 'Arsonal' types listed.

I've used 2-4 D. At recommended mix/application rates I've never had it kill grass.

Any herbicide will kill (burn) grass and just about anything else if the mix/application rate is strong.

Active ingredient in Round Up is glyphosate. Any generic with the same strength of glyphosate is just as effective and generally much cheaper.

The label on the front will tell you the strength of the glyphosate.

We spray our fence lines with glyphosate (round up), but only about 1 ft wide. Don't have any problems with erosion, etc.

Anytime you have bare ground, something is going to try to grow there, but you do need to keep fence lines, especially electric fences, clear.

Too much tall grass or weeds touching an electric fence will cause a drain. The charge will eventually cause a "burned" place in the vegetation, but still, if there's a lot growing up and touching an electric fence you will need to spray it out.

I must do things differently, my wires are probably a bit higher than 2 feet but not much, and my pastures never have grass 2 feet high, the cattle see to that. :)

Every place is different, gotta do what works for you.

Some herbicides like roundup only kill the green plants it touches, new seeds can sprout the following day and come back. Great product to knock down what is already there. Not good for long term.

Some stay in the soil longer, and both kill green stuff and keep the soil a bit sterilized for a longer time. Some will be effective a over a year, but like I said, those are getting tougher for the average person to come by - if they are put on sandy soils or areas that wash into other fields/waterways, it can show up in the environment.

Stuff like Milestone and Tordon and Crossbow are good at taking out the brush and trees and broadleaves, but won't get your grasses. Perhaps a shot of roundup will kill off the grass to stay away a year or more, and one of these will give you longer term brush/broadleaf control?

Paraquat (Gramaxone, etc) is another to look into.

The salt pellets as someone suggested might be very long lasting and about as cheap as you can get, as well as being pretty good for the environment. Would last longer if you are in a dry area, need to be replaced if you get lots of rain.

Sahara DG by BASF. Not a restricted use herbicide, doesn't leach much even in sandy soil. Keep it away from desirable trees. Works for a couple of years at least. Probably $150 or so for 10 lbs.

they just shook a bag around stand pipe...i suppose you could make a solution and spray it but make sure you clean everything afterwards.
