I dropped my head off yesterday morning for the 641's valve job. Their website said $50 basic valve job.

They called today and said it would be $347.oo for the complete job. They want to replace all the seats, valve guides and fix 3 spark plug holes.

I just picked it back up and paid them $25 for the cleaning...which it does look brand new but ...

...I'm taking it to a different place tomorrow that is a little further out of the way but I've got favorable references about.

I guess I should of run it by you fellas first but when I heard that figure I just kind of jumped in the pickup and headed that way.

$347? Really?

Some places will hose you. Others won't.
Just remember to factor in the cost of
the rebuild into how long you think you'll
use the machine. I'd rather pay more
and know it's been done well and done
right than the cheap and

To get my tractor functional years ago it
took a considerable amount of money.
But I got the best mechanics, they didn't
hose me and those two taught me more
than they'd ever imagine I'd let seep in.

just my two drachmas...

I don't think that's all that bad if they do a good job. Last head I had done was in the $1500 range but it was for a hard working tractor. Sounds to me like they won't let a half baked job leave the door.Jim

A good machine shop is worth its weight in gold, we used to have a burgmans auto parts store with a shop in the back. Tear an engine down, take the heads, block and crank up there, tell the guy, check it out, what ever it needs, call me when its ready. I never felt like I got intercoursed on anything I took up there. I hated it when they decided to close, but the one I take stuff to now is just as good, mabe a little slow at times though.

I had a couple of folks tell me to take to Vineyards in Ennis, Tx. I was told they are good folks and do a fine job.

I figure if I'm going to pay that much, I'll take it to the good folks.

347 less 50 is 297 for the parts.... plus we are talking DFW here, no cheap eggs in the big city....I guess if you were thinking that all parts are reusable... it could be a schocker, but price those pextra parts/work from other sources and see where it lets you be.
BUT what does matter is the fact that you want it done right, for 50 bucks, for 347 or 521, ...!!as others stated.

There is a big difference in just doing a valve job and putting one back to factory specs, depends on what you want to pay for.If the guides are worn, most likely the stems are too and the seats may be too bad to grind. See it every day. Just spent 750.00 on an Oliver head.

I had a head rebuilt about 15 years ago, it cost about $200 then. This was by a local speed shop. They did a very good job.

You gotta know what you wanna spend but that price doesn't sound that bad if they are gonna stand behing thier work...... Would you do a halfass job on something that you had to answer for??

I didn't pick it up because I thought they were going to do to good of a job.

I'm taking it to a place that I've heard good things about. It just happens that instead of dropping it off at lunch, I now have to go down to our new place and drop it off in the morning on the way back into work. More inconvenient, but if I'm going to spend this much, I'd rather they get the money.

Small town shop that is vouched for. I don't feel bad about pulling it out of a big city shop.

We'll see what they do.

Thats the kind of shop I take my heads to, lots of Ford FE heads were re-done over and over by machine shops that didn't know what they were doing. Anyone out there that run the Fe engines 390 406 427 and had to keep doing valve jobs, it was both the machine shops fault, and yours for taking the heads back to'em.

Find a shop with only one person (the owner). You will get a cheaper, and a better job. I found one in San Diego like that. About a 30 mi drive but worth it. He does my motorcycle cylinders also. Thats how I found him. Stan

The place I'm taking it to is a Father and Son business that has been around for years.

I should of taken a picture of Blaine's. It's a wharehouse!

I just did a Ford 981 head. The valves, guides, and seats. The parts where just over $250, for American made stuff. So the $97 dollars for the labor is not out of line.

You will get what you pay for. You are the one that is out on a limb thinking you are going to get a worn out head redone of $50.00.

I never thought I'd get it done for $50 but I also wasn't aware you knew the best valve job prices in the DFW area.

Out of all the places we have down here, where would you have taken the head?

By the way, I just dropped off the head and met and shook hands with Greg Vineyard in Ennis, Tx.

I'm already feeling better about it.

Follow up.

Vineyards Engine repair in Ennis, Tx.

$238 to replace all valve guides, replace 3 spark plug thread holes and grind all the valve seats.

He said the valve seats didn't need replacing as Blaine's said, but he did say they could of went either way.

I saved a $100 and used a small Father and Son business. I feel better now.
