I'm thinking of taking Hwy 3 across Iowa to SD and then Nebraska. What are some interesting points--historic, natural formations, local celebrations etc. Thinking after the 4th of July.

My house, I live right on 3. Oh, you want interesting stuff. The Franklin County Fair in Hampton is like the third week of July, that's a pretty good time. Clarion has the Heartland Museum.

Albert City Threshermen's Show in August. About 2-1/2 miles of Highway 3 on Country Road M54.

bgoathill;

Your house might be interesting. Part of the reason I want to take 3, as well as other less traveled roads, is I want to see the real American Heartland up close and personal not out the window at 70 mph on I-80. I can only imagine the number of "Mom and Pop" restaurants along the way that still serve home-cooked meals. Mostly I'm on a prairie quest and to see the wide-open vistas, but would certainly stop for a pioneer museum along the way.

My family lives near Hwy 3 in the Allison area. It may be a little out of your way, but Charles City is 20-25 miles north on Hwy 218 and is home of the Floyd County Museum. Among other items they have a nice collection of Hart-Parr and Oliver tractors as well as manuals, brochures, etc.

Albert City show is August 10-11-12, 2 1/2 miles north of HW 3 on county road M54. Minnie Mo is the feature. If you have a hankering for ice cream, LeMars has a good old fashioned ice cream parlor a couple blocks north of the HWY 3 and old HWY 75 junction towards the west side of town.

Well, thats interesting, between Cherokee and
Clarion, you"ll see some of the straightest road
in Iowa/the U.S./The world. And if the corn is
up you"ll see nothing but walls of corn blocking
any other view for many, many miles. There are very few farms, or houses, and if you break down
you"d better have a cell phone, and know where you are, as you are litterly "Miles from nowhere"
Mom and Pop cafe"s are few, but most every town has a Root Beer stand, with soft serve ice cream,
and hot dogs. Have fun...Been there-done that!

Oh, come on Greygoat - he's saying the fourth of July. The corn isn't up that high by then yet.
Take HWY 18 through southern SD and you will see the variety from farmland east of the Missouri to ranch and range land west of the Missouri. You'll be going through Indian Reservation land and enter the Black Hills at Hot Springs. Mosey through the Hills to Mt. Rushmore and note the difference of scenery just in a few miles. From grass to rocks to forest. My favorite drive is the drive into Spearfish from south to north. You can litterally coast for seven miles, enjoying fantastic scenery on each side.
Exit The Hills at Rapid City east to Wall where you will see a drug store like you've probably never seen before. Take the Badlands tour exiting on Interstate 90 and find your way to Nebraska. There's a good museum at Murdo.

There is an excellent museum to see in Clarion, IA. There is almost everything in that museum, including but not limited to old tractors. I have been there a couple of times and would go back in a heartbeat. Very impressive. Mike

A few miles north of Hyway 3 is the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend, Iowa. And of course miles and miles of wind turbines. Humboldt county historical museum in Dakota City. The Little Brown Church is not far off #3 in Nashua, Iowa. Swede
