How do you price used parts??

Am wondering how one would price used parts of farming related items? If new parts are still available or at least a price, do you charge a certain % of it? What if no info is available on used or new?? Do you call bone yards and pretend that you need the part even though in all actuality you just want to get a price... (don't like the idea myself)? Not trying to uncover trade secrets, but I might have something for sale every now and then in the distant future....
Thanks, Ralph.

I use a catalog I have form years back and charge that for parts. So I charge less then going price but that way I do not get hurt and also figure I am not hurting others

In our automotive parts business we charge approx. 1/2 of new parts price, more or less depending on the part, customer, etc. It seems to be a generally acceptable starting point and somewhat of a common practice in our line of work.

I pay attention to what the price trends are on items I sell- ebay and craigslist can give you a fair gauge to what something is worth. Keep in mind if you would pay your asking price or not for a given item your selling. Another way you can go about it is to just put a price on it, and see if anyone calls!

I guess I don't see anything of this a secret, but I have met good, informed sellers and uninformed, poor sellers. I am too a customer many times, so when I go about selling something, I want to do the best I can to give my customers their best value- and to get their repeat business.

You have to live with the market Ralph. Cruise the want ads and Ebay every day. See what stuff is selling for and what is there all the time (common) and what never is (rare) 1/2 is a pretty good rule of thumb but common parts you have to take what you can get. Some stuff is worth more thrown in the iron pile @ 10 cents a pound. One the other hand a part that is well coveted and NLA you just have to pick a price that you think the market will stand. Like the little boy said in the muffler shop ad, "I just ask them how much they have and then I charge that"

I basically agree with the 1/2 price of new approach, but sometimes the only NEW parts are aftermarket, imported, and of questionable quality and fit, which, in my opinion makes a USED, original part, in excellent condition, as valuable, or even MORE valuable than the new stuff, and if you have a used part that is no longer available, aftermarket or otherwise, then the sky is the limit.

yes, a parts guy told me 1/2 of new. But these days, new is very high. And, in all seriousness, used parts are basically something ready to break. I never buy used unless it comes off a machine that looks newer than the one I own. I also look it over for fatigue cracks ( which are basically invisible) and avoid used on anything critical.
