Is it just me?

Or does anybody else ever get the feeling that they have too much mechanical stuff around? Seems I just can't fix it or replace it fast enough. The 4 wheeler quit on me this morning. Acts just like it did last fall when I broke a rocker arm in it. Must have broke another one. Right when I really need it to check cows several times a day and use it for a shield to keep the old battle axes from running me down when I'm tagging and vaccinating calves.
Can't help thinking about what an Amish guy said one time. Said "we don't want to be unhandy people,we just don't want to be slaves to technology".
Never used to need all this stuff to do everyday chores, but then we didn't used to have to do the work of 5 men to make a living either.

I can tell ya from experience, a horse ain't the answer- they have ongoing operating costs, whether they're operating or not. Been there, done that, got several VERY expensive T-shirts, from exotic places hosting the Paso Fino conventions.

True!
Think of all the engines you have,
Lawn mower,
Tractors
power washer
weed wacker
Generator
cars, trucks
rotor tiller
All the implements for the tractors
And all the house appliances
and, and, and.

I guess modern technology has a drawback like you said, ....maintenance.

I have way too much. Like me most of it is well used, but still works. Dad often said when he stopped farming he wanted to drove all his tractors over a cliff into the ocean. He never got too. Stan

Sometime, count up the number of tires you have on all your vehicles, tractors, and impliments, You'll be amazed. I did a few years back, and I was in the neighborhood of 150, and I've added several since then. Scary!

it would be nice to go back to the work horses , but like you say , they need alot of attention everyday , a old case vac to just putt thru the old log trails , now the wife would love the horses , she like rideing

I did that once too. I came up with over 190. You would think with all them tires, you would have trouble everyday. But I don't. Having said that I suppose tomorrow I will have 10 flats.

Its nearly impossible to keep everything running and ready, seems like time slips away faster than money. You hit the nail about having to do the work of 5 men, if I could find any labor to hire, which I can"t, even if they would work for a reasonable wage the gov"t would step in and foul it some way. I can"t believe how fast its all gone downhill.

I feel like that from time to time. Recently it's seemed like every time I fixed one leak on the tractor, something else started dripping. Finally catching up, though.
