tractor fire avoided

Earlier today I was busy adjusting the cultivator hooked to my Ferguson TO20. Wife walks by and says there"s smoke coming from under the hood. I open the hood and there is fire on top of the battery. I keep a piece of tire tube between the hood and battery terminal. It must have wore thru, shorted to the hood and started to burn. That was a close one as gas cap is 12" away.

I nearly burned my JD 1020 up a couple years ago when a wreb built a nest atop my block and manifold. There was no way to get to it to stomp it out.

I saw a big JD pulled back into the Deere dealer's lot many years ago, had just been sold, caught fire in the field and nothing could be done. I have a 5" diameter, 2-A / 10-BC extinguisher mounted on the back of my H. Every 5 or 10 yeras, get the thing serviced at the extinguisher company, since the powder can compress in the bottom of it.

You might want to take the extinguisher off the tractor every month or so & turn it upside down & shake it some, keeps the powder loose & makes it ready to use if you need it. Extinguishers need an annual inspection, but like you, mine usually go every 4 or 5 years instead of the one. Just my thoughts, Keith

Class A pressurized 2-1/2 water with some dish soap added. Beats any or dry chem or CO2 on Class A or B fires. Does just fine on low voltage class C's too.

Was out plowing with a Farmall 200, when the starter switch shorted out grounding through the pull rod to the light bracket. Burned my hand pretty badly, destroyed the battery prying the cable off the terminal with whatever tool I had in the tool box at the time, but saved the tractor. Was s pretty intense minute or so. Now, the pull rod is suspended off a plastic spacer. Could have lost the whole tractor.

I set fire to my 1020 one time. Was messing with the fuel pump and sprayed gas on the distributor when I turned the key and spun it over.
Set fire to an Oliver Super 55 Diesel one time too. Had a can of starting fluid shoved up under the dash. Reached up to pull it out and touched a live wire and burned a hole in the can.
Burned up a New Idea Uni Harvester once.
My uncle took a load of manure out with his Massey 35 one time. His son drove in just a few minutes later with a fan belt he'd found in the road. Wondered if his dad had lost it off the tractor. He opened the door to the lean to on the barn where he'd just parked it and the heat houser was smouldering. Probably would have burned the barn down if he hadn't found that belt and looked in there.

Agree with B&D, like them so much better. Have 2 on my baler (535)and always carry one on the big green tractors, the F3000 got a powder one due to space restrictions (wish they'd make a small 1.25-1.5 gal water kind....)
