John Deere 4230

They where hard starting tractors that held up fairly well. I always thought they where under powered for a cab and Quad range. They really never had any major issues with them.

As for value they are not the highest priced seller around. Even in todays hot market they usually will not bring much over 10K with a cab and good paint. An open station synco range can be bought for less than $7500.

For a tractor to use they would be a better buy than a JD 4020. You get a wet clutch and live charge pump. These where both a big step up over the JD 4020. Even though the JD 4020 will out sell a JD 4230.

You must be running equipment into the ground without service. Our 4230 started just fine down to freezing temps. All it needed was high CCA batteries, HD cables and low resistance connections.

They are good tractors. If you put a turbo on it and turn the fuel up a little it will hang with or pass a 4430. Prices are dead on what somebody posted below. 10k for a good cab tractor and 7500 or a little less for a open station.

neighbor farmer had one and it started real hard. also said you had to run it about full throttle to pull much of anything. He liked it but ended up trading it. Id say they are dead on on the prices.

Around here they are not the tractor of choice so they don't appear in sales much and when they do they are usually low hours. The 4430 on the other hand has a turbo and 25 more horses and that is what people buy and wear out.

I posted not long ago about having the choice between the two. Both did not have any "workings" redone, but did have cosmetics and rubber fully restored in factory condition. Interior of cab was basically new and AC was the new freon with new compressor and hoses and all.

I gave $17 for the 4230 with 3900 hrs on it and in very tight condition and passed on the 4430 with obvious9000+ hour wear which was priced at $19.

I didn't like the sloppy starts on cold days and using a starting aid was inconvenient besides I don't like subjecting my engines to them. I replaced the OEM battery setup with parallel 12v Size 31 HD batteries, with 3/8 studded terminals, new 00 custom made battery cables, applying power and ground at the starter solenoid and starter case.

Never got too cold down here to start it in just a few seconds with no starting aid.

With regular service they are a great tractor. We have had a 4230 and a 4430 working full time since we bought them slightly used a couple years after they rolled off the line. The shift pattern is my only gripe. Otherwise they start fine and run fine and do what they need to do.
