oil bath air filter

I have a 4010 for about 10 years. When I first got it, I took the oil filter out and flushed it out with diesel. It had alot of corn silk and dirt caught up in the screening. Glad I looked.

Truthfully as long as it is not gear oil then any other weight will work. It just has to be able to trap dust/dirt. I guess some real light hydraulic oil may not work but usually the same as the engine uses is fine.

In practice you are probably right, but the whole design was centered on engine oil weight required for the engine. Once that was a given, then the amount of incoming air required for the engine dertermined how high the filter media in the air filter body had to be, in order to keep the engine from sucking the oil out of the cleaner. The oil in theory was to be drawn into the filter media upon start up, to catch the dirt as it came through.
