Installing a electric fuel gauge on my Ford 860. Installation instructions call for 18 gauge wire between sending unit and gauge. I have 10 and 12 gauge wire but, no 18. If I use the 10 or 12 gauge wire, will it affect the resistance to give me errors in tank level? Or should I buy a spool of 18 gauge wire?

As noted, any larger guage (smaller number) is fine- but I'd get a roll of 16, because most automotive lighting uses it. I've never used 18 for anything. Using 12 or 10 just wastes your money.

The difference in ohms between these wire gauges is insignificant for your application. The main problem with the lower gauge numbered wires may be the physical size (larger diameter) and the space where you need to run them for your installation.

Also I would be sure to use stranded wire rather than solid.

I agree with those below, heres my answers:

"If I use the 10 or 12 gauge wire, will it affect the resistance to give me errors in tank level?"

NO The resistance of the short piece of wire, be it 10 or even 18, as compared to the sending unit resistance (maybe 30 to over 100 ohms???) is almost negligible so either will work and I doubt you could ever see any difference in the level indication regardless

Or should I buy a spool of 18 gauge wire?

If I were buying a spool of wired for general purpose hook up, Id go ahead and buy 16 or 14. Id buy stranded of course for better vibration withstand.
