Drawbar Steel

Folks, this drawbar is off of our 41 Allis WC. Is a drawbar like this typically tempered steel or regular mild? Would like to apply heat and straighten it but don't want to turn it into scrap metal. If it is tempered can I heat it without damage? Otherwise I'll just leave it alone. Thanks, Tom B.

I think they're made out of X10 steel which is generally formed cold as heating would damage it's properties.
If you knew someone with a big press that would be the way to straighten it.
A friend of mine used to work at a giant machine shop before it closed it's doors and all the machinery was auctioned off.
They had a 600 ton press there that would have straightened that out easy.

If it bent cold, you can bend it back cold. Set it on edge and weld a cross on it to keep it on edge. put an anvil under it in the right place and wale on it with the 12 lb. sledge.

Iv welded up many Farm All draw bars that were worn oval and thin.Use a carbon rod in the hole.I found a green limb worked fine if you didnt have a carbon rod.

I bought an old Allis a while back ant the draw bar had a hole similar to yours. I placed a piece of copper under the draw bar and took a wire welder and filled the hole. Not a small wire welder. Turned the draw bar over removed the copper and ran some weld on the other side. Cleaned off all excess weld and drilled a one inch hole.

I would bet a good sized shop press could straighten that.

I've fixed several worn out holes by welding in a piece of black pipe. Just choose an appropriate size, hammer it into an oval shape so it can be inserted into the elongated hole, weld it in place, grind it flush, and then drill a new hole.
