Direction Of Flow In Radiator

A few of us were discussing the flow of coolant in a Allis WD radiator, we thought the flow would be from thermostat up to the top of radiator and down to the bottom hose to the water pump, others said the opposite. Who is right?
 
Reverse flow radiators are not common. The heat causes convection currents which (in the absence of a pump) provide flow from hot engine top, to radiator where it is cooled and sinks to feed the bottom of the engine. Pumped systems do this same circulation tactic.
Cross flow radiators still have the inlet (usually) in the top on one end, and the outlet on the bottom opposite. AC tractors are hot in the top cold back to the engine bottom. Jim
 
From thermostat housing to top tank, thru the core, to bottom tank, back to block.

If you really want to test your theory, take a heat gun, and with the tractor hot enough to keep the thermostat open, take the temp of the top tank vs the bottom tank. You will see that the top tank is around 12 degrees or so hotter than the bottom tank. That means the flow is from top to bottom in the radiator.

Now, if coolant flow is low, (bad water pump for example) the coolant spends more time in the radiator and the temp difference will be greater. If the fins are plugged with dirt, the temp difference will be less. (the fan's air flow can't remove much heat)
 
HH I am betting you are talking from experience when you say a 12 degree drop thru the radiator..
New KUBOTA small tractors are designed to see about 26 deg drop across the radiator. when we see the corners get stopped up with mud and weed seed things go bad quick. Air FLOW thru the radiator is just as important as the water flow.
Some of the olders units as Jan pointed out did not have water pump and just got hot in the top and cool out the bottom.
