Dangers of brake cleaner and phosgene gas.

Thanks for the heads up. The really dangerous thing that I remember about phosgene is the smell. It smells like new mown hay so it will not usually be suspected.

I remember Carbon tetrachloride and trichlorethylene being banned in the sixties. Did they come back or what? Dave

The other dangerous thing about phosgene is that it only takes 2 common household cleaning products to produce it. My father was cleaning a rental house he owned and made the mistake of mixing cleaners while working on the toilet. He barely made it outside to fresh air in time.

DAVE Thanx for the Link ,,,I will tell as many GUYS I can ,A guy in mechanic shop used Brake parts cleaner when I was in Hi school in a PINCH ,IT WORX FINE, He Warned Stay away from the fumes!!,SINCE THEN ,I too , In a PINCH have used Brake parts cleaner in my Carburator ,, Yes it leaves a stink ! ,,and it will get you if you are close to the ground ,,, I NEVER KNEW THE RISKS !AND I WILL NEVER USE IT AS A FLAMMABLE CLEANER AGAIN

Interesting. Without researching much, I do not understand
just how Argon (a Noble Gas) can react with ANYTHING.
The reason they use it for shielding is because it is non-
reactive, same as Helium.
I rate this right up there with the 'welding makes contact
lenses stick to your corneas' hazard.

o YEAH ?!? ,,,spray some brake parts cleaner into the air breather of a running engine ,,make sure you are in wide open space ,, but you will get the drift regardless..

We use a lot of brake cleaner at work too, but it's all non-chlorinated. We also use 2 different brands, one eats paint (has acetone in it) but dries without residue, and the other will be ok on fresh paint but also will leave a residue after it dries.

Niether one has trichlorethylene in it.

Carb cleaner is included in the warning.I see nutcases heating parts and spraying penetrating oil on them. The chemicals evaporate instantly and produce poison gases. My first factory job was using a solvent to degrease cigarette lighters before they were sprayed with lacquer.

I went out and checked my different brands of brake cleaner and all
my chem tool and other goodies for cautions. Seems the EPA has
been effective in saving us from ourselves.

I use a lot of brake cleaner, both as a high power spray degreaser
for most anything, and as a perfect surface prep for painting. I like
the fact that it does the job but doesn't hurt cured paint.

Sounds like a lot of alarmist crap to me.
