Bid $1650 on a 8' red devil snowblower, but auctioneer sold mid bid for $1600, was willing to go to $2000. ------ me off, sometimes they will spend 3 minutes trying to get an extra $2 on something, the blower they wouldnt wait 5 sec. Guess the one that was supposed to get it did.

Sometimes they "overlook" you.... I make it a habit to YELL (!!) "hepp" and raise and waive my arm or both if one does not do it. (hard to put it in words, but the auctioneer helper yell it when they spot/hear someone bid/raise a bid. Y'all know what it sounds like if you go to auctions.....) It not only gets their attention because they think its a fellow helper, but people around you take notice of your yelling and arm waiving, which in return is hard to ignore by the auction staff. Makes you look like an idiot, but I do that a few times and they will not ignore me anymore ....
If I may add a gripe of mine, I hate it when they bundle "scrap", several items, implements etc to accomodate the scrappers. Scrapper have "accounts" with a lot of auctioneers, they do not need to pay at the end of the day, they will get a bill in the mail. What the #/*-<^@! makes them so special?? Just venting, Ralph.

> sounds like ther's still money out there if they can pay that for an H and B farmall

Everything in that list seems really high to me. Almost 3 grand for a 1996 four wheeler?!

I remember going to a consignment sale one spring (close to tax day) and I came to buy, but I don't even think I got the chance to bid. I remember seeing a nice used bumper-pull cattle trailer selling for more than what a brand new one costs not too far up the road. The next fall I went to another at the same place and everything was dirt cheap. I put it down to tax refund checks burning holes in some people's pockets.

Helper yelped my bid, they new I was "new bidder jumping in" I was 4' from the blower and auctioneer, 2' from helper, auctioneer was aware of it, apparently was set on the $1600 bidder got it for $1600.

Dave from MN,

Maybe that's all his buddy wanted to pay!

I loved auctions quit going because I noticed how dishonest they have become and now they want a buyers premium to boot.

Since you were the new bidder, it can happen that they miss you. Once you bid the auct or ring man should maintain eye contact til you quit bidding. You mentioned several tractors- If I have something similar to sell I try to catch the second bidder and tell him what I have for sale. Every contact helps. Also, if I"m a buyer I refrain from going to weekend sales. Too much hobby farm money shows up there- witness the extremely high price on the B and the H.

Dave,
Sounds like the $1600 bid was the auctioneers buddy. If you stayed in, his buddy would have been at $2000, if you kept running it up.

I immediately get suspicious when the auctioneer knows the bidders by name.

Rick,What is wrong with the auctioneer knowing someones name?It isn't that small a world, maybe something does get knocked off early, but just because the auctioneer knows yours-mine-etc.name is not a reason to blame.

Yep, I have seen it go both ways.

Biggest auction outfit close by is real bad about both. He has a slimmy jocky who sells loads of stuff at his consignment sales. If the jocky is bid'n on something at an estate or close out sale you have to stand right in front of the auctioneer and jump up and down so that EVERY ONE can see you or the jocky will get what ever it is for his open'n bid.

The flip side was a few years ago at an estate sale a young guy maybe early 20's was crawl'n all over this one 1066, you could just see the look in his eye, he was in love. He had the open'n bid at $6000. Bought it for $10,500. No one else bid, auctioneer was take'n "bids" off the tobacco barn behind him, there was no one back there.
