I just hooked up a delco 10 SI alt. on my tractor. I used the original switch and when I turn it off it will keep runing. I know I need a diode, and I will get one when I go to town. The ? I have is I can unhook the wire and it will stop but if I hook it up again and don't start the tractor for a week or so will it kill the battery. Thanks

Inserting the diode in the line between the ign switch and alternator terminal #1 will cure the running-on problem.

But adding the diode won't solve battery drain issue. Assuming you've wired the alternator correctly, problem has gotta be either a failed output diode or a bad internal voltage regulator.

Recommend taking the alternator to NAPA or equivalent and put it on their test stand (it's free!) to identify the problem.

No it will not drain the battery through that connection if it is rehooked. If the Alternator is good, (assumption) the stopping of the alternator when the engine stops causes the regulator #1 terminal to go to a ground state. This is evidenced by the fact that in a car, when the ignition is turned on, the "Idiot light" comes on. Jim.

I think he is not finding the battery dead, I think he is asking if it will discharge through the #1 terminal. It should not cause a drain unless it has a bad regulator, (or a one wire designed alternator)

Thanks for the replies. The tractor had a one wire alt. on it that went to pot, so I put a 3 wire on and had to hook up the extra wire and it won't turn off unless I unhook the wire. So again thank you and when I get to town I will get a diode.
