The drag racing legend Bill Jenkins has passed on. Educated at Cornell he was one of the most innovative and knowlledgable racers to ever tune an engine. He wrote the book on Chevrolet racing engine building.

I saw Da'Grump run back in the late '70s at New England Dragway in NH when it was still a Division 1 NHRA track. He practically invented Pro-Stock racing. Jf

Another sad day for us drag racers that were in our teens or early 20,s during the 1960,s and 1970,s drag race hay-days. Age has caught up with all of us and a lot of the top racers back then were 10 yrs older than us at the time and it,s gonna happen more often now. Accept for ole Chris Karrammasines , still driving and tuning top fuel car at over 80 yrs old~!!! Proof that "passion" extends life. RIP Grump , you left a legacy.

All it took was a few seconds of up close personal contact with Jenkins while he was at the race track or in his shop to know the answer to that. He didn't have much time for small talk, or idle chatter. He was all business. Most fans didn't know a lot about him, but Jenkins was an EXTREMELY well educated man. He rceieved an engineering degree from Cornell University. He applied that education and innovative mind to stay a couple steps ahead of his competition. At one point in the early '70's, Jenkins was considered to be one of the highest paid "athletes" in all of sports. He achieved that lofty status with a number of major wins, but most of his earnings came from a novel idea at the time, doing endorsements. Quite an accomplishment from the 5'-4" pudgy bald cigar chomping "grump"!

I had the pleasure of knowing Jenkins as well as long time Super Stock/Pro Stock wizzard Bob Glidden. (Who was the exact polar opposite of Jenkins...VERY outgoing and open) Not many people I've ever met were capable of outworking OR out thinking those two.

The story was he was tired of all these kids at the track asking him questions while he was trying to concentrate on his own car.He figured if he was grumpy then people would leave him alone so he could get work done. Everyone knew of his knowledge and he was constanly asked stuff by fans and other racers.
