Motorcycle VIN number question O/T

Ok so the boy misplaced the title for his new bike so we need to file for a lost title for it so we can get it on the road. So is the engine number the same as the VIN number. Ya we would use the number of the tag up on the triple tree but it is no longer readable. Or maybe there is some other place that the number might be stamped. This is on a 1979 Yamaha 750 special by the way.
Thanks

Rich I'm wondering, is it stamped somewhere ? I've got an '80 650 maximum and an '81 or '82, thought they were on a sticker on the forks,(triple tree?)

don't know the exact term for it, but look on either side of the frame where the fork shaft/bearings are. Bet if you call the local law, they'll tell you where to look.

Probably. But not neccessirily. Engines can be swapped from bike to bike. The dealer or the DOT can tell you where it is stamped on the frame. Make the boy do the hunting. He lost the title. Unless of course this is the son/soldier and he is out of country...

Stamped frame numbers should be most of VIN numbers. 1981 or 1983 was the newer standardized number requirements, before that was a 1970s frame number requirement but slightly different pattern, less numbers-- and engine number didn"t have to match frame number and many didn"t. Neck area or upper frame front tube close to neck is a common location-but lower front frame tube by engine mount or lower rear of frame just in front of swingarm is also known and was common on the fairinged models as the frame neck area might not be "clearly visible" as required. another location I,ve seen is frame tube just under/side seat area. Have fun, check local police for a inspection report to give to DOT/DMV. RN

Yep most bikes have a sticker there but this one can not be read so that does not help. I'll have to look more since I am sure there has to be some place where the numbers would be stamp in metal so that they can not be removed easy

Hes home now. He is one of those that was part of the Military down sizing. He was signed up for 6 years but they let him go after 3 due to the fact the seabees are doing away with a number of battalions so yep he is still looking

Here in NY the frame number has to be use - stamped on the tube near the steering neck usually. If no title - you lay a piece of paper over the numbers and rub a pencil sideways over the paper to get a tracing imprint. That's all they need here. They then give a temporary title and registration if wanted and then conduct a search to make sure the bike isn't stolen. If it is? I suspect you get an unwanted visit from the police.

Did the title get transfered? If so,why do you need the title? Insurance co would have the VIN number.

The only time I need a title is for ownership transfer or to prove no lien exists.

seems to me he Yamaha parts lookup site will tell you where it is stamped. I had to do that for a Yamaha 4 wheeler I have.

old, if/since title hasn"t been changed over yet to you, see if prev owner will file for lost/copy title with their registration,,depending if title isn"t purged in system,, some states do that, i can do that here in Colo..could save a lot of red tape..

We just got the bike a couple weeks ago so yep it has not been put in our name yet so there is the problem. Where we live a person can take the plates off the bike he sold and use them on the new one for 30 days. So he has been doing that but I told him I needed the title so I could get things as they need to be but now he can not find it

Boy..... Wouldn't it suck if he was to report the bike stolen now??????

Not likely to be a problem since we had a witness when we got the bike. When we got this bike we had stopped to see a guy we know who has an auction house and he had the bike so he was witness to the fact we got the bike all legal like

That would work out just fine if we knew the guy but since we got it in one of those type deals where we had stopped to talk to a friend and he in turn had the bike at his auction house and we got it indirectly from him we do not know the guy and no sure if the friend knows him or not. If the boy does not find the title I will call my friend but sort of making to boy sweat it out a bit to maybe teach him a lesson

Besides the sticker it should also be stamped into the frame in case the sticker gets damaged or removed. If it is the original engine then that # will also match the frame stamping. If you can't read the frame try rubbing a pencil across paper for a tracing which should be more legible. At this point in my state you would have to bring the bike to a special inspection center where they would run the #s and verify the # and place another foil type sticker at the neck. Then issue a new regular title.

if the engine number has 17 digits, chances are its the same as frame...unless somebody swapped engines...look behind headlight housing...most of the rice i've dealt with was stamped on the front headstock.

Both the number on the frame behind the head light on the triple tree and the engine number match but it is only 9 digits long but back in 1979 they where shorter then they are now days

26 year old Navy vet and you are "teaching him a lesson?" Are you gonna spank him or ground him too? LOL. He should be able to get 100 jobs and buy a great car with his Navy training. Cut him loose Rich.

He is 22 and in this area finding a job is like finding hens teeth. As for teaching him az lesson heck yes he has lost stuff like this before and he needs to grow up and learn. As for cutting lose that is up to him not me
