Here's a dumb one

I took one of our vans at work in for NYS inspection yesterday and it faild due to a crack in the passenger side rear view mirror that you can barely see. Inspector said if I take the mirror off it would pass.

That is about as dumb as it gets, a cracked mirror is still functional. In fact you now see two objects that are both closer than they appear so you have to be twice as careful....LOL..... Here in NC if you were to take the mirror off then it wouldn't pass.

Dont surprise me....I here theres a lot a crack in NEW YORK CITY

Mine would have failed for a cracked drivers side door mirror. So I went to napa and for 3 bucks, I bought a square mirror with double side stick tape on it and put it over the crack. After it passed inspection, I took it off. They also told me you have to have a gas cap on the filler neck, I told the guy, well the other tank leaks gas, he said I don't care???? Whole thing is a joke.

i use to do vehicle safety inspections here in Tejas...guy came in and his wipers didnt work at all...i told him no way i could pass it...we looked it up in rule book "if vehicle has a windshield,it has to have working wipers".
he said ok and prceeded to kick his windshield out...i gave him his sticker and he drove off...govt rules at their finest.

mjbrown,
another example of why we need LESS government, not MORE. Here in Michigan we have no vehicle inspections. You can actually own a POS car for work purposes or to go to the grocery store. Used to have emissions inspections, got rid of them too.

And guess what, the world has not ended. We're losing more and more of our freedoms to the bureaucrats every day and the sad thing is: common sense is not in their vocabulary. To them, a rule is a rule, no matter how inane it is.

Yep many odd laws when it come to inspections and it varies a lot form state to state. Here in Missouri a car can pass inspection if it does not have a wind shield but if it has a bad crack it will not. Or is the car seat does not have a back on it but has seat belts it will pass and I could go on and on

I'd almost like to take my little 82 S10 I drive back and forth to work to some of these progressive states where things have to be inspected just to see how many things they'd find wrong with her. I be the built in spitoon in the floor board would be on the list.

Nephew works at a body shop that specializes in BMW's, so he buys totals and rebuilds them in his shop at home. He did a 5 series for his dad. Dad takes it to State Patrol to be inspected. Didn't have Bills of Sale for hood and one front fender. Gotta have bills of sale for all "major components".

So they bought some real cheap repops from China- didn't fit right, were in black primer (rest of the car was perfect). Took it back to State Patrol- same guy inspecting. Passed it this time, and said, with a wink, "Bet your son will have this thing looking perfect in less than an hour." BIL smiled and agreed.

Here in MD anytime a car or truck changes ownership it has to be state inspected. The last time I had a car inspected in 2006 it cost $100.00 just for the inspection. Had it needed repairs that would be extra. Hal

Twenty or so years ago I had a Toyota Pup with the 3.0 V-6. The exhaust rotted out so I put a 10" or so glass pack on it that we had. A month or so later there was a sniffer unit in town to check emissions on vehicles. I crawled under my truc an stuck the hose in the exhaust for them. They ran the test and said something was wrong and crawled under themselves to put that hose in. He crawls out goes over to his co-worker and said "The hose IS in the exhaust." They ran the test and got the same results. Both shaking their heads said there is no way that truck should pass emissions as ALL the emission controls were gone. But...they had to pass the truck since the sniffer never had a better reading on any other Toyota trucks before.

Many years ago, when I bought my first MC, a Honda 450-4, it was used and had to be inspected. The previous owner had taken the baffles out of the mufflers, and it was pretty loud. And, because of no baffles, the inspection station wouldn't pass it. So, I went to the Coke machine, and bought two sodas. Gave one to the inspector, and I drank one. Then I knocked a hole in the bottoms, and shoved them up the offending tailpipes. Instant quiet, and a new inspection sticker. Pulled out onto the street, stopped, yanked them out and went on up the road...

Go to K-mart and buy a little convex mirror and stick it on over the cracked part. Sometimes they have some nice ones in the bicycle dept. You do know the fake bird poop trick ,right?

At least here in Pa a lot of our inspection rules make sense. There are a few that don't however. We have a long list of "fail if" stuff that makes it easier in most cases. But like anywhere government is involved there are somethings not on the "fail if" list that should be and others on the list that need to be removed. Our safety inspection is once a year up to 17,000 lbs and twice a year above 17,001 lbs.

Old buddy of mine moved to Maryland from New York a few years ago. He had two cars, one six months old, the other about 3 years old. He had to have both inspected to the tune of about $700 before he could get Maryland plates. Inspection on a 6 month old vehicle?????

Inspection costs 12.50 here.I did inspections in MA in the 50s for 50 cents. Most old cars and trucks have been put off the road here.

In Pennsylvania, certain counties must have a gas cap test performed on the vehicle before the safety inspection is done. My friend paid around $12,000 for his testing equipment/computer. He also has to pay a yearly fee of $1,000 for a service contract for the testing equipment, plus he has to pay MCI for the telephone connection to the DMV in Harrisburg. The whole thing is a joke.

"Here's a dumb one".

If I had a dime for everytime my parents said that when I entered the room as I was growing up, I'd be too dumb to know how much I had.

On a serious note though, something similar happened to me a decade or so ago when I lived in Illinois where they have emmisions testing. Was something minor like yours, and I asked what it had to do with emmisions. The guy told me that such things are dangerous and if aren't corrected should keep the vehicle off the road so doesn't need inspecting. I went to the auto parts store, bought whatever it was that needed, put it on, went back and had to wait until the following Sarurday because was only open until Noon on Saturdays, and not late enough during the weekdays for me to get home, drop the company truck off, take my vehicle to get inspected.

BC--I used to remove my friends windshield that had a crack in it every year or two for the texas inspection. 56 chevy windshield - he finally found a replacement about ten years back--but he still has the old one. in Ok we did away with the inspection--funny thing about them is that if you went to a muffler shop to get it inspected you needed a muffler--or mechanic and it needed suspension parts--service station it needed bulbs and some belts etc...

PlowBpy is,n it nice to live where we don,t have all those laws. Don,t drive junk but have 7 with licence here on the hill and sure glad I don,t have to have them inspected.

How about amending the motor vehicle code to read "No defect of any non-required part shall be reason for failure of a required inspection" And "any inspection station that fails a vehicle during a required inspection is prohibited from performing any repair noted on the failed inspection and is required to reinspect the vehicle one additional time at no additional cost" OR change the law so vehicles are submitted for inspection by an auditing or law enforcement agencies in an undercover mode, failing to identify defects means a fine, listing things that are not defective means a big fine, criminal conviction, jail time, loss of trade license and restitution to vehicle owners in the amount of repairs performed on inspected vehicles since the last audit.

theres really no point in it anymore except austin wants the revenue...and the windshield isnt even a item of inspection...or it wasnt when i still did them...only thing illegal about a crack is if it blocks drivers vision like a sunburst crack and thats up to the law man.
there sure aint any money in doing inspections...i got licensed because i was the only garage in town...more tryin to help folks out than anything.

I took out one of the two horns on my 2003 Dodge 3500, added a cheap air horn from Harbor Freight. Took it to Dodge dealer in Houston for inspection, failed - horn was too loud.
I reached into wheel well disconnected air line, said try again.
Passed this time. Paid the bill, reconnected the air line and went home shaking my head.

NYs inspection laws baffle me. The emissions standards are the same for my 97 F150 as they are for a brand new car! Over the past few months I've put on both exhaust manifolds, both side pipes with cats and 3 O2 sensors. All to get the little yellow dash light to go off. Exhaust leaks cause the computer to read the truck running lean. But if it was a '96 (a 16 year old truck instead of a 15 year old truck) the dash light wouldn't matter as long as the computer showed 2 emissions systems working, or so it's explained to me. And if it was a 85 or older, there are zero emissions tests.

How NY expects people to get 10 plus year old cars and trucks to pass emissions inspection is beyond me.

(quoted from post at 20:07:46 03/28/12) I took one of our vans at work in for NYS inspection yesterday and it faild due to a crack in the passenger side rear view mirror that you can barely see. Inspector said if I take the mirror off it would pass.

My biggest beef with lick'em and stick'ems on the emissions side of it. If a businesses is not qualified to repair emissions you should not be able to attempt to fix it.... A emission inspector should be ASE certified as a Master and Advanced engine performance... Most all the cars I get have been to the local parts changers that have no ID what they are doing and have wasted the customers money parts swap'n to try and get the check engine light out...

Its a damm shame so many shops depend on inspections to stay in businesses around here by using their best guess to to fix it,,, its a total consumer rip off... I think inspection stations should be owned and operated by the state,,, If they could make money at it they would but they can not...

I don't depend on the chump change a inspection generates and will fail one in a heartbeat,,, I have to much invested in the equipment to let it set idle,,, here you are charged with a felony and have to go to court the fines are steep if you get caught cheating... The only reason I do'em is so I can Finnish up a check engine light repair...

Here ours say no rust holes in the body, so my truck failed for rusted out wheel arches. I asked why the rule existed and they said so fumes don't get into the vehicle. I asked what if I took the box off? They said sure, just have mud flaps and lights and you're good to go.

We have 5 here with licence on this old hill. Only the S10 would count as real junk. My little work car blew a motor about a year and a half ago, the second junk yard engine worked good for about three days before it smoked the computer. Took forever to get every thing lined out. Drive'n the ton truck back and forth to the night job was kill'n me with $75 in diesel a week. Bought the S10 at a local car lot that was have'n a push, pull, drag it in sale. Saved her from the crusher for only $600. Runs like a top, gets over 22 mpg and uses no oil. I can see the road under my feet, there's holes in the bed you can toss a cat through, tail lights are held in with zip ties, but she's paid for. Most rides on the road can't say that!

A long enough screw driver stuck up behind the dash to break the bulb does wanders for them little check engine lights. ;)
